History was waiting for the Blue Knights, and they seized it. Wyoming Seminary combined patience at the plate, aggressive baserunning and timely pitching to overwhelm Elk Lake 21-4 Friday, securing the program’s first-ever District 2 Class 2A championship and punching its ticket to the PIAA Tournament.

Hazleton Area struck early and never looked back Thursday afternoon at Wilkes University, defeating Wilkes-Barre Area 6-2 to capture the District 2/4 Class 6A Championship. Dom Marino’s first-inning home run sparked a six-run start, while Freddie Corrado and Jack Esposito combined to shut the door as the Cougars secured their seventh consecutive district crown.

The Nativity BVM High School baseball team made a powerful statement Monday, capturing its third straight 1A District championship with an emphatic 11-0 victory over Moravian Academy in a game shortened to five innings by the mercy rule.

After a chaotic week of playoff baseball, including the longest baseball game in PIAA history, the District 2 Baseball Championships are set. Games will take place on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, May 26-29. Here’s a preview of each championship game along with a prediction.

Brayden Miller made his presence felt in every phase Friday afternoon. The Elk Lake standout delivered four RBIs at the plate and struck out 10 on the mound as the Warriors pulled away from Lackawanna Trail, earning an 8-2 District 2 Class 2A semifinal victory and a trip to the championship game.

Nobody saw it coming… until it happened. Trailing by three entering the seventh inning, No. 4 Wyoming Seminary flipped the District 2 Class 2A semifinal upside down Friday at Gibby Field, exploding for five late runs to shock Holy Redeemer 6-3 and punch its ticket to the district championship.

Mid Valley wasted little time taking control Friday night in Throop. Joey Romanosky reached base five times and collected four hits, while the Spartans unleashed a six-run second inning and never looked back, rolling past Crestwood 12-4 to punch their ticket to the District 2 Class 4A championship game.

Benton secured a 6-4 victory over Cowanesque Valley in a neutral conference tournament baseball game on Friday. Benton, the District 4 1A Champion, overcame a four-error outing to outhit their opponents and clinch the win.

Wyoming Seminary College Prep staged a dramatic seventh-inning rally to defeat Holy Redeemer 6-3 in the D2 AA Semifinal. Freshman Nieko Ravaioli delivered a key double, igniting the five-run comeback.

Seven innings weren’t enough to tell the story until the final swings. Forest City carried a one-run lead into the bottom of the seventh and was three outs away from punching its ticket, but Susquehanna Community had one final answer. Gabe Maby delivered the biggest hit of the afternoon, ripping a walk-off two-run single as the Sabers stunned the Foresters 5-4 and earned a date with MMI Prep for the District 2 Class A championship on Tuesday.

The afternoon kept stretching in the Back Mountain and nobody was leaving. Inning after inning, Dunmore and Lake-Lehman kept answering each other in a District 2 Class 3A semifinal that simply refused to end. Nineteen innings. Thirty-two combined hits. Three pitchers on each side. Nearly three full baseball games later, the Bucks finally found the run that survived in what appears to be the longest PIAA playoff baseball game ever played.

Wellsboro Hornets overpower Bloomsburg 11-1, extending their winning streak to 14 games and improving their season record to 18-2.

Playoff baseball returned to Schautz Stadium Tuesday and No. 3 Dunmore looked right at home. Luis Arias and Evan Mizenko delivered the power, Mason Stets controlled the game on the mound, and the Bucks handled business with a 5-1 win over No. 6 Western Wayne to punch their ticket to the District 2 Class 3A semifinals.

The postseason atmosphere was there Tuesday night, and the Dallas Varsity Mountaineers responded with one of their most complete performances of the season.
