One step closer to Penn State. Behind another dominant performance from ace Ava Hazelton and a timely offensive surge, Mid Valley shut out Villa Joseph Marie 8-0 Thursday afternoon in the PIAA Class 3A Quarterfinals. The victory sends the Spartanettes to the state semifinals, where they will be one win away from playing for a PIAA championship.

I have spent thirty years around distance running, but this year's District 2 senior boys class is historic. These eight elite runners collected thirty-eight state trips, eighteen state medals, and sixty-four district medals. They rewrote the regional record books by relentlessly pushing each other to legendary heights.

For six innings, every pitch felt enormous. Every baserunner felt like the one that could decide it. In a District 2 Class 3A championship atmosphere worthy of the stage at Wilkes University, Mid Valley and Lake-Lehman traded zeros in a tense pitchers’ duel before the Spartanettes finally broke through in the seventh to continue a growing dynasty.

Mid Valley wasted little time taking control Friday night in Throop. Joey Romanosky reached base five times and collected four hits, while the Spartans unleashed a six-run second inning and never looked back, rolling past Crestwood 12-4 to punch their ticket to the District 2 Class 4A championship game.

The road to the title still runs through the champs. Ava Hazelton carved through the Chargerettes, the Spartanettes struck early and often, and Mid Valley is heading back to the District 2 Class 3A championship game where a collision with top-seeded Lake-Lehman now waits.

The opening day of the PIAA District 4 Track and Field Championships delivered fast times, record-breaking performances, and dramatic competition Thursday, May 14, as athletes across Classes AA and AAA battled for district medals and coveted spots at next week’s state championships.

Down near the tracks edge, the noise from the infield was constant. There was no rail to separate the action, just the boundary line where passionate coaches stood screaming out split times, urging their athletes to find another gear. But the real story of the day unfolded right at the finish line. Frame after frame on my camera screen captured the absolute truth of the afternoon: competitors wearing completely different school colors running stride-for-stride, actively pulling each other along. You could see these athletes completely emptying the tank to cross the tape, some throwing their heads back in pure exhaustion, others letting out bursts of joy, and many collapsing into the arms of teammates or rivals alike. Looking at those frozen expressions, there was no doubt about it: every single competitor left a piece of themselves on that track.

Sunshine, fast times, district records, and unforgettable performances took over Scranton Memorial Stadium as the PIAA District 2 Championships delivered two electric days of track and field action. From Wilkes-Barre Area’s record-breaking relay to Olivia Thomas announcing herself as a statewide star, District 2’s biggest stage was loaded with moments that turned heads across Pennsylvania.

Top-10 matchup. Packed tension. Two ace pitchers trading blows. Thursday night had all the ingredients of a postseason softball game, and Holy Cross rose to the moment behind Ava Schmidt’s electric performance in the circle. In a showdown between No. 5 Mid Valley and No. 7 Holy Cross in the latest SportzWire Coaches Poll, the Crusaders leaned on big swings and dominant pitching to earn a 5-2 road win.

Old Forge snatched a wild 6-4 win! Ava Arnold blasted a three-run walk-off bomb in the 7th, sealing the dramatic victory against Mid Valley.

Wyoming Area defeated Mid Valley 8-6 in a back-and-forth thriller. Snyder's clutch relief pitching secured the Warriors' win.

Some nights are bigger than baseball. Under a perfect sky at Mid Valley, the Spartans played for something deeper, something lasting. With Eddie Kaufman’s legacy front and center, this wasn’t just a game. It was a reminder.
