After fighting through five straight elimination games to earn a rematch in the Pennsylvania Little League Softball State Championship, Valley’s impressive postseason run came to an end Monday in South Williamsport. Bullskin Township claimed the state title, while Valley finished as one of the top 8-10 softball teams in the Commonwealth.

They’ve battled through the loser’s bracket, won five straight elimination games, and now they’re one win away from a Pennsylvania State Championship. Valley’s 7-4 victory over Bullskin erased an earlier tournament loss and sets the stage for an all-or-nothing championship showdown Monday in South Williamsport.

Strong pitching, timely defense, and a pair of key runs carried Valley Little League to a hard-earned 2-1 victory over Christmas City on Friday afternoon in the Pennsylvania 8-9-10 Little League Softball State Tournament in Williamsport. The win sends Valley into the next round, where they’ll face West Suburban this evening after tournament organizers adjusted the schedule due to the forecast.

A championship atmosphere filled Blakely Recreational Complex on Saturday as two outstanding District 32 Minors clubs battled for the title. Behind a dominant outing from Owen Wiseman and timely late-game hitting, Carbino Club Archbald edged Mid Valley 3-1 to capture the District 32 Championship and advance to next week’s Section 5 Tournament in Drums.

Behind another dominant performance from ace Ava Hazelton and a timely offensive surge, Mid Valley shut out Villa Joseph Marie 8-0 Thursday afternoon in the PIAA Class 3A Quarterfinals. The victory sends the Spartanettes to the state semifinals, where they will be one win away from playing for a PIAA championship.

I have spent thirty years around distance running, but this year's District 2 senior boys class is historic. These eight elite runners collected thirty-eight state trips, eighteen state medals, and sixty-four district medals. They rewrote the regional record books by relentlessly pushing each other to legendary heights.

For six innings, every pitch felt enormous. Every baserunner felt like the one that could decide it. In a District 2 Class 3A championship atmosphere worthy of the stage at Wilkes University, Mid Valley and Lake-Lehman traded zeros in a tense pitchers’ duel before the Spartanettes finally broke through in the seventh to continue a growing dynasty.

Freshman sensation Olivia Thomas has taken the Pennsylvania track and field scene by storm, earning Sportzwire’s Athlete of the Week honors for the week of May 18 after a historic postseason run that continues to raise the standard for the Mid Valley Spartanettes program.

Mid Valley wasted little time taking control Friday night in Throop. Joey Romanosky reached base five times and collected four hits, while the Spartans unleashed a six-run second inning and never looked back, rolling past Crestwood 12-4 to punch their ticket to the District 2 Class 4A championship game.

The road to the title still runs through the champs. Ava Hazelton carved through the Chargerettes, the Spartanettes struck early and often, and Mid Valley is heading back to the District 2 Class 3A championship game where a collision with top-seeded Lake-Lehman now waits.

The opening day of the PIAA District 4 Track and Field Championships delivered fast times, record-breaking performances, and dramatic competition Thursday, May 14, as athletes across Classes AA and AAA battled for district medals and coveted spots at next week’s state championships.
