MESHOPPEN, PA. — Different races. Different classifications. Two performances that stood above the rest.

Mid Valley’s Jacob Borrelli and Delaware Valley’s Grace Holderith left little doubt about their championship form at the PIAA District 2 Cross Country Championships, held Wednesday at the Wyoming County Fairgrounds.

Borrelli captured the boys Class 2A individual championship in 15:57.31, while Holderith claimed the girls Class 3A crown in 18:56.39.

They were the fastest male and female runners across the district championship races, each breaking a significant time barrier and finishing well ahead of the competition.

Their performances earn them recognition as this week’s SportzWire Co-Athletes of the Week, powered by HYDRABATHS® Swing Salt - where performance meets recovery.

But these championships were hardly their first standout performances of 2026.

Both runners entered the postseason with impressive regular-season résumés, earning SportzWire First Team All-Star selections for their consistency, competitive success and performances throughout the fall.

A Championship Performance, Years in the Making

For Jacob Borrelli, winning has become a familiar experience. But Wednesday’s performance was particularly impressive.

The Mid Valley standout completed the district championship course in 15:57.31, becoming the only boys runner to break 16 minutes and finishing nearly 47 seconds ahead of the next competitor.

His individual victory helped power the Spartans to the District 2 Class 2A team championship, with Mid Valley finishing first with 56 points, comfortably ahead of Wallenpaupack’s 90.

It was another championship moment for a program that has built a tradition of success.

And Borrelli has been right in the middle of it.

A Season of Consistency

Borrelli earned the No. 1 position on SportzWire’s 2026 Boys Cross Country First Team All-Star selections, following a regular season filled with strong performances.

Across seven league meets, he reached the podium every time, recording four victories and three third-place finishes.

He also delivered impressive results against larger invitational fields, including a victory at the Cliff Robbins Invitational and a sixth-place finish at the Bloser Invitational.

At the VA XC Showcase in Mechanicsville, Virginia, Borrelli clocked a season-best 15:47.10, demonstrating his ability to compete at a high level beyond District 2.

Those results established him as one of the region’s most consistent runners heading into the postseason.

And when the district championship arrived, he delivered again.

Running for More Than Individual Gold

Following Wednesday’s victory, SportzWire’s Bob Gaetano caught up with Borrelli to discuss his approach to the race.

After a faster-than-anticipated opening mile, Borrelli settled into his rhythm before attacking the final portion of the course.

“I knew the last mile was all kinda downhill and flat, so I just wanted to rip that hard,” he explained.

But when the conversation turned to Mid Valley’s team championship, Borrelli was quick to recognize the work behind the Spartans’ success.

“We’ve been working for this all year,” he said, pointing to summer training and the time spent together as teammates.

Mid Valley’s depth was on display, with Chris von Ahnen finishing 10th and Reeve Owen 11th, giving the Spartans three runners among the first 11 finishers.

For Borrelli, celebrating another team championship alongside his teammates made the individual achievement even more meaningful.

Now, he turns his attention to the PIAA State Championships at Big Spring High School in Newville on November 7.

Already a state medalist, Borrelli hopes to improve on last year’s performance.

“I got a medal last year. Hoping for a little bit more this year,” he told Gaetano.

His outlook remains refreshingly simple.

“I’m more just looking to have fun and run fast.”

Grace Holderith | Delaware Valley Warriors

Breaking Away From the Field

Grace Holderith entered the District 2 championships with an impressive season behind her.

She left with another championship to add to her résumé.

The Delaware Valley standout captured the girls Class 3A individual title in 18:56.39, becoming the only female runner across the district championship races to break the 19-minute mark.

Her winning margin exceeded 50 seconds.

But the decisive separation didn’t come immediately.

Speaking with SportzWire’s Bob Gaetano after the race, Holderith explained that the opening stages brought pressure from the surrounding runners.

“Right at the start, people were on my shoulders, and they kind of remained there for a little while,” she said.

Holderith recognized an opportunity on one of the course’s hills and used it to create the separation she needed.

“I had to use that big hill down there to kind of open up that gap,” she explained.

From there, the Delaware Valley standout took control and never looked back.

One of District 2’s Most Consistent Competitors

Holderith’s district championship added to a regular season that earned her the No. 2 position on SportzWire’s 2026 Girls Cross Country First Team All-Star selections.

She recorded six league podium finishes, winning five times and finishing second once.

Her only league-meet defeat came against Scranton Prep’s Vella Byrne, SportzWire’s top-ranked regular-season runner.

Holderith also tested herself against elite competition at the prestigious Paul Short Run at Lehigh University, finishing 13th in the Gold race with a time of 19:06.70.

Her fastest recorded time of the regular season was an impressive 17:58.50, achieved during a league meet at Delaware Valley.

The combination of consistency, competitive experience and proven speed made Holderith a formidable contender entering the district championships.

And when the opportunity arrived, she produced her biggest postseason victory of the year.

Another Opportunity at States

Holderith knows what it’s like to compete on Pennsylvania’s biggest cross country stage.

After finishing as the district runner-up last season, she went on to place 24th at the PIAA State Championships, a result that surprised even her.

“It was a big surprise,” she told Gaetano. “It was my first time down there, and I definitely did not have that expectation going into the race.”

Now a district champion, Holderith returns to the state championship stage with another year of experience and an impressive season behind her.

She acknowledged that Big Spring will present a new challenge, having not previously raced the Newville course.

But Wednesday’s performance demonstrated her ability to adjust, respond to pressure and make the right move when it mattered most.

Two Champions. One Final Stage.

Borrelli and Holderith took different paths through the 2026 season, but their district championship performances shared several similarities.

Both established themselves among District 2’s elite runners during the regular season.

Both earned SportzWire First Team All-Star recognition.

Both dominated their respective district championship races, setting the fastest boys and girls times of the day.

And both now have another opportunity to test themselves against Pennsylvania’s best.

On Saturday, November 7, at Big Spring High School in Newville, the PIAA State Cross Country Championships will provide the next challenge.

For Borrelli, it’s a chance to build on a previous state medal while representing a championship Mid Valley program.

For Holderith, it’s an opportunity to improve on last year’s impressive 24th-place finish and continue a remarkable season.

Whatever happens next, both have already earned their place among District 2’s standout performers of 2026.

Congratulations to Jacob Borrelli of Mid Valley and Grace Holderith of Delaware Valley, your SportzWire Co-Athletes of the Week, powered by HYDRABATHS® Swing Salt - where performance meets recovery.
