With a little over a minute left in the Hoop Group Showcase League championship game, Chuck Hiller called a timeout. The coach of the Wyoming Valley Junior Clutch 17u girls’ basketball team didn’t have a play to draw up or a substitute to get in. Hiller just wanted that last huddle together with a team he has coached for 4 years. “I just told them how proud I was of them and that it was an honor to be a part of it.” Hiller said. Junior Clutch won that game 77-35, securing the HGSL Championship, in their final game of the season.

One day after forcing a winner-take-all championship game, Back Mountain Little League completed its remarkable comeback Saturday, defeating Green Ridge Little League 4-2 to capture the Section 5 9-11 Championship at Mountain Top Little League. The title sends Back Mountain to next week’s Pennsylvania State Tournament in Selinsgrove.

Back Mountain Little League built an early cushion, weathered a late charge from Mountain Top, and punched its ticket to the Section 5 9-11 Championship with a 7-5 victory Thursday evening. Despite Mountain Top outhitting Back Mountain 14-6, timely hitting, disciplined at-bats and clean defense proved to be the difference as the District 32 champions earned a date with fellow District 32 representative Green Ridge in Friday night’s title game.

Runs came in waves Wednesday night as District 32 champion Green Ridge Little League and District 16 champion Mountain Top combined for 29 runs in an entertaining Section 5 9-11 All-Star Tournament matchup. After Mountain Top stormed back with an eight-run fourth inning to seize the lead, Green Ridge answered with eight runs of its own in the bottom half before adding seven more in the fifth to earn a 20-9 victory.

Two of District 2’s top lacrosse standouts are taking home one of the sport’s highest individual honors. Abington Heights’ Allie Rothenberger became a two-time USA Lacrosse All-American, while Crestwood’s Gia Caporuscio earned the prestigious recognition for the first time after a dominant junior campaign. A classic pitchers duel turned into a nail biter Wednesday evening as Carbino Club All Stars 12U manufactured just enough offense to secure a hard fought 2 to 0 victory over Mountain Top 11/12. Elizabeth Troy earned the win for Carbino, tossing five and two thirds shutout innings, while Mountain Tops Emily Wenner turned in a dominant performance in the circle despite the tough loss, racking up an incredible 11 strikeouts over five innings.

Mountain Top 8-10 All Stars secured a decisive 14-4 victory over Hanover, driven by strong offensive performance, 15 stolen bases, and Adrianna Perugino's pitching.

Mountain Top Major Softball All Stars secured the District 16 championship with an 11-2 victory, completing an undefeated 5-0 tournament run. Emily Wenner starred with 16 strikeouts and 3 hits.

She’s only a freshman, but Isla Centak is already making national headlines. The Crestwood standout added another major accomplishment to her remarkable debut season, capturing the Freshman Girls Javelin Championship at New Balance Nationals at the University of Pennsylvania while continuing to cement herself as one of Pennsylvania’s top young track and field athletes.
