MOUNTAIN TOP, PA — The Berwick Bulldogs bounced back in impressive fashion Friday night, earning a 24-8 victory over Crestwood behind a strong rushing attack and a dominant defensive effort.
Senior running back Gavin Galutia led the way with 104 rushing yards and three touchdowns as Berwick improved to 5-4 on the season, setting the stage for a highly anticipated regular-season finale against undefeated Dallas.
After dealing with injuries along the offensive line throughout the season, the Bulldogs welcomed back their starting unit, and the difference was evident early.
Berwick wasted little time establishing control in the opening quarter.
Galutia capped a three-play, 52-yard scoring drive with a 6-yard touchdown run to give the Bulldogs a 7-0 advantage. The drive was highlighted by a 37-yard run from Gabe Decker.
The Bulldogs struck again later in the quarter after their defense stopped Crestwood on fourth down.
Jake Lisnock broke free for a 26-yard gain before Galutia found the end zone on a 12-yard run, extending Berwick’s lead to 14-0.
Crestwood threatened to cut into the deficit during the second quarter, but Berwick’s defense came through with two critical stops.
Shiloh Escobar intercepted a pass in the end zone to end one scoring opportunity, while the Bulldogs stopped quarterback Teddy Taylor short of the goal line on the final play of the first half.
Berwick carried its 14-0 advantage into halftime.
The Bulldogs continued to control the game in the third quarter.
After Crestwood failed to recover an attempted onside kick to open the second half, Berwick took advantage of favorable field position.
Galutia carried the ball on all six plays of a 50-yard scoring drive, finishing with a 2-yard touchdown run to extend the lead to 21-0.
The Bulldogs added to their advantage in the fourth quarter when Caleb Yost connected on a 35-yard field goal, pushing the lead to 24-0.
Crestwood eventually got on the scoreboard when Taylor connected with Braylon Murray on a 27-yard touchdown pass. A successful two-point conversion brought the score to 24-8, but Berwick maintained control the rest of the way.
Galutia finished with 104 yards on 18 carries and three touchdowns, while Berwick totaled 210 rushing yards.
Escobar completed 4 of 6 passes for 57 yards, with Decker accounting for all four receptions.
Defensively, the Bulldogs delivered one of their stronger performances of the season, forcing an interception and keeping Crestwood off the scoreboard until the closing minutes.
The victory was an important response for Berwick following its loss to Williamsport the previous week.
Now, the Bulldogs face their biggest challenge of the regular season.
Berwick will host undefeated Dallas next Friday night at Crispin Field, with the Wyoming Valley Conference Division 2 championship on the line.
Dallas enters the matchup at 9-0 following a 42-13 victory over Hanover Area, while Berwick will look to carry the momentum from Friday’s win into the championship showdown.
With a conference title at stake and the postseason approaching, the Bulldogs have an opportunity to finish their regular season with a statement victory.
