MOUNTAIN TOP — Crestwood opened the PIAA Class 5A girls basketball state playoffs with a strong performance Saturday night, defeating Cocalico 51–38 to advance to the second round.

BENSALEM, PA — Crestwood battled back from an early deficit and held off a furious fourth-quarter push to secure a 60–58 victory over Holy Ghost Prep Friday night in the opening round of the PIAA Class 5A state tournament.

NEPA Elite Volleyball Club continued to make a statement across the Northeast this weekend at the Irish Madness Invitational at Harrah’s in Atlantic City. Competing against 30+ teams from multiple states, NEPA Elite teams battled through high-level competition with 16U Wildfire and 17U Storm both finishing an impressive 4th place overall. Athletes representing over 28 schools across District 2, District 4, and District 11 came together to compete as one, proving that NEPA Elite continues to grow as one of the region’s most competitive and respected volleyball programs

The Dallas Mountaineers continued their late-season surge Saturday, capturing the Wyoming Valley Conference championship with a hard-earned 43–38 victory over Crestwood. In a matchup defined by physical defense, pressure, and momentum swings, Dallas delivered a strong second-half performance to secure its third win over the Comets this season and carry serious momentum into district play.

When the Wyoming Valley Conference championship tipped off Saturday afternoon, it felt like the perfect ending to a season-long rivalry. The area’s two best teams — Hazleton Area and Crestwood — met for the third time this year after splitting their regular-season matchups, setting the stage for a true rubber match with a championship on the line.

Crestwood controlled the game from the opening tip, using an 18 point first quarter and balanced scoring to pull away from Dallas in a 48 to 36 round robin win. Led by Jordan Andrews, Keira Dougherty, and Jackie Gallagher, the Comets combined defensive discipline with timely free throw shooting to close strong and carry momentum forward.

Crestwood showed poise from the opening tip, breaking the pressure and controlling the tempo in a tough road environment. By staying patient against the press and capitalizing once it was beaten, the Comets turned defense into offense and pulled away in the second half for a statement win.

PITTSTON — Crestwood erased an 11-point second-half deficit and forced overtime on a dramatic buzzer-beating three-pointer by Gio Barna, but Pittston Area responded in the extra period to secure a 43–39 Division 1 victory Saturday night.

Crestwood controlled the game from the opening tip, using a fast start and a dominant third quarter to pull away from Wyoming Valley West in a 73 30 home victory. Ayden Agapito led all scorers with 28 points as the Comets showcased balanced offense and steady defensive pressure throughout the night.

Unranked Crestwood delivered a statement performance on Saturday, knocking off Wilkes-Barre Area 56–39 in WVC Division I action. The Comets set the tone defensively, holding the Wolfpack to single digits in three of the four quarters and controlling the game from the opening tip.

The “Single A” boys’ race was the highlight of the day, showcasing District 2’s best as Elk Lake stormed to a state championship and Riverside claimed silver. Led by Kendle Jones’ blazing 16:05 runner-up finish, Elk Lake’s top trio set the tone early, while sophomore Trevor Upright and senior Whalen Kinney sealed the title with clutch second-half surges. Riverside countered with tight pack running from Mikey Schimelfenig and the Connor brothers to secure second place. District 2 shined across the board with standout medal runs from Susquehanna’s Maxx Kelly, Lackawanna Trail’s Avery Ronchi, and solid performances from Lakeland and Blue Ridge to cap an unforgettable day for the region.
