BERWICK — In a tightly contested state playoff battle Tuesday night at Berwick High School, Wyoming Seminary used a strong fourth-quarter surge to defeat Marion Catholic, 46–43, and advance in postseason play.
The game featured several momentum swings as both teams traded leads throughout the night.
Marion Catholic opened the contest with a narrow edge, taking a 13–12 lead at the end of the first quarter. The pace remained intense in the second quarter, but Wyoming Seminary managed to gain a slight advantage before halftime. The Blue Knights outscored Marion Catholic in the period to take a 26–24 lead into the break.
The third quarter belonged to Marion Catholic. The Fillies regained control and carried a 31–28 lead into the final frame, putting pressure on Wyoming Seminary to respond.
Respond they did.
Wyoming Seminary delivered its biggest offensive stretch of the night in the fourth quarter, scoring 18 points when it mattered most. The late push proved just enough to overcome Marion Catholic and secure the 46–43 victory.
A major reason Wyoming Seminary remained within striking distance throughout the game was the performance of Ella Stambaugh. Stambaugh scored 20 points overall and was instrumental through the first three quarters, knocking down four three-pointers to keep her team in contention. Although she scored just three points in the fourth quarter, her early scoring set the stage for her teammates to take over down the stretch.
Several Blue Knights stepped up in the final period to help seal the win. Natalina DeNaples finished with 10 points, while Stella Ruiz and Ellie Kersey each added six. Olivia Evans contributed four points as Wyoming Seminary connected on five three-pointers as a team, four of them coming from Stambaugh.
Marion Catholic also found success from beyond the arc, hitting six three-pointers on the night. DeAnne Pugh led the Fillies with 16 points, while Addy Mareh added 15 in a strong offensive effort that kept Marion Catholic in the game until the final moments.
Despite Marion Catholic’s late push, Wyoming Seminary’s fourth-quarter execution ultimately made the difference, allowing the Blue Knights to escape with the three-point playoff victory.
