Nockley, Aponick and a relentless Blue Knights lineup power Seminary past Elk Lake for a program first AA title

SCRANTON — History was made Friday afternoon at Volpe Field.

Behind a patient and explosive offensive performance, Wyoming Seminary captured the first District 2 Class 2A baseball championship in program history with a commanding 21-4 victory over Elk Lake.

The Blue Knights showcased the discipline, speed and depth that have made them one of the region's most dangerous teams nobody wanted to face, drawing 21 walks, stealing 11 bases and breaking the game open with a nine-run seventh inning.

Leading the charge was one of the nation's premier college prospects, Leo Nockley, who reached base six times and demonstrated remarkable plate discipline by drawing five walks. Nockley also delivered the game's biggest early swing, racing around the bases for an inside-the-park home run in the opening inning to give Wyoming Seminary an immediate spark.

The Blue Knights wasted little time seizing control.

Seminary plated five runs in the first inning, taking advantage of Nockley's inside-the-park homer, an RBI walk by Caleb Aponick, and pressure on the bases that forced an Elk Lake defensive miscue.

A run in the second inning extended the lead before Elk Lake battled back to stay within striking distance.

The Warriors showed resilience throughout the afternoon. Stephen Newhart drove in two runs and collected a hit, while Matt Parr, Alden Felker, Brayden Miller, Lucas Benscoter and Newhart each recorded hits for Elk Lake. Despite trailing, the Warriors continued to compete and forced Seminary to earn every out.

But the Blue Knights had another surge waiting.

After carrying a multi-run lead into the late innings, Wyoming Seminary erupted for nine runs in the seventh, sending 15 batters to the plate and turning a competitive championship game into a celebration. The inning featured a combination of walks, timely hitting and aggressive baserunning that reflected the identity the Blue Knights have displayed all season.

On the mound, Caleb Aponick delivered another championship-caliber performance. The right-hander worked six innings, allowing five hits and four runs — none earned while striking out seven. He consistently worked out of trouble and kept Elk Lake from generating sustained momentum.

Ryan Finlay closed the door in relief with a scoreless seventh inning, allowing no hits and striking out one.

The Blue Knights finished with just five hits, but their relentless approach at the plate generated constant traffic on the bases. Seminary drew 21 walks, was hit by two pitches and repeatedly capitalized on scoring opportunities.

For a program that had never before captured a District 2 baseball championship, the final out represented a milestone years in the making.

As players poured onto the field in celebration, Wyoming Seminary secured its place in school history, earning the first district baseball AA title the Blue Knights have ever brought back to Kingston.

Now, with a championship banner secured, Seminary turns its attention toward the PIAA tournament and the opportunity to continue a season that has already become unforgettable.
