PLAINS TOWNSHIP, Pa. — Wyoming Area is back on top of District 2 field hockey.
The Warriors captured the District 2 Class A championship Wednesday evening with a 2-0 victory over Lake-Lehman at Wilkes-Barre Area High School, using two third-quarter goals and a dominant defensive performance to secure their second district title in three seasons.
After a scoreless first half, Wyoming Area broke through with a pair of goals less than two minutes apart, providing all the offense needed to claim the championship.
Shannon Kearns delivered the game’s opening goal with 4:23 remaining in the third quarter. Following a scramble inside the scoring circle, Kearns managed to redirect the ball past Lake-Lehman goalkeeper Gigi Kirkutis to give the Warriors a 1-0 advantage.
The momentum continued shortly afterward when Ella Campenni converted a penalty stroke with 2:40 remaining in the quarter, extending Wyoming Area’s lead to 2-0.
The Warriors controlled much of the contest, generating 10 shots and 15 penalty corners while limiting Lake-Lehman to just one shot and three corners.
Wyoming Area goalkeeper Adriana Fanti recorded the shutout, while Kirkutis finished with eight saves for the Black Knights.
The championship victory marked another chapter in a developing postseason rivalry between the two programs.
Wyoming Area defeated Lake-Lehman for the district championship in 2024 before the Black Knights returned the favor in 2025. Wednesday’s meeting represented the third consecutive season the teams had faced one another with the Class A title on the line.
Under head coach Bree Bednarski, the Warriors have continued to establish themselves among the area’s premier field hockey programs.
The championship also completed an impressive district playoff run for Wyoming Area.
The Warriors advanced to the title game following a hard-fought 1-0 semifinal victory over Lackawanna Trail. Claudia Rehill scored the deciding goal late in the fourth quarter, redirecting a ball from Kearns into the cage with just 2:40 remaining.
Lake-Lehman entered Wednesday’s championship following an impressive upset of top-seeded Wyoming Seminary in the semifinals. The fifth-seeded Black Knights knocked off Seminary 1-0 to earn another opportunity to compete for district gold.
But in the championship, Wyoming Area’s relentless offensive pressure and disciplined defense proved too much to overcome.
The victory adds another championship to a program with an established history of postseason success. Wyoming Area reached the PIAA Class A state championship game in 2022 and advanced to the state semifinals in 2019, 2021 and 2024.
Now, with another district championship secured, the Warriors turn their attention to the PIAA Class A state tournament, which begins Tuesday, November 10.
For Wyoming Area, the district championship represents both a return to the top and another opportunity to make a deep postseason run.
