The Williamsport Millionaires girls' basketball team went on the road tonight and defeated Lewisburg 43-38. Player of the game, Jaelynn Helmrich was behind it all, scoring 15 points and staying active in the rebounding department. Helmrich was backed by Laylah Martin as she scored 14 for the Millionaires.

Q1 -

Following an opening basket from Lewisburg's Ava Motto, Williamsport began to show what they were truly made of. Numerous Williamsport girls found the basket, including Jaelynn Helmrich, Laylah Martin, and Zaelana Minor before Lewisburg found the basket again. Williamsport also gathered more than five steals during the first quarter. India Walker was the only one keeping Lewisburg in the game early on as she scored a transition layup, and a deep three-pointer to contribute to half of Lewisburg's first quarter scoring (16-10 Williamsport).

Q2 -

The scoring slowed down in the second quarter. Only 14 total points were scored amongst both teams. Lauren Schwartz scored all of Lewisburg's six points during the second quarter of play. On the other side of things, six of Williamsport's eight points came from starters, however, Jaelynn Helmrich was held to just two. Williamsport carried an eight-point lead into halftime (24-16 Millionaires)

Halftime Log -

Williamsport has looked like the better team through the first two quarters of play (without a doubt). They've rebounded better, took better shots, and created more scoring opportunities. If they continue to play at this level, coach Lamar Ballard and his Millionaires will earn their best upset win of the season.

Q3 -

Lewisburg came out of the half firing on all cylinders as they were able to create a 6-0 run. Lauren Schwartz, India Walker, and Adele McNamara all contributed points to the Green Dragons run. Lewisburg outscored Williamsport 14-7 during the third quarter, and Ava Motto gave Lewisburg their first lead of the second half towards the end of the third quarter. After playing just 3-4 minutes in the first half, Motto pitched in two major threes. Laylah Martin scored Williamsport's final four points of the third quarter, putting the Millionaires in front by just one as they entered the final quarter of play (31-30 Williamsport).

Q4 -

The final quarter was the wildest by far as both teams traded buckets back-and-forth to create a crazy 43-38 finish. Clara Fabian put the Millionaires up by three at the beginning of the quarter, but Lauren Schwartz knocked down two free throws at the line to cut the lead right back to one. The Millionaires played solid defense during the remaining minutes, allowing just six points. During the final stretch, Jaelynn Helmrich and Laylah Martin combined for 10 of Williamsport's 12 points scored. Jaelynn's ability to score the basketball and present overwhelming defense earned her player of the game.

Postgame

In a game full of great action from start to finish, Jaelynn Helmrich separated herself from the others, earning herself player of the game and a postgame interview. Jaelynn told me that her and her team played great defense in their win over Lewisburg tonight, overcoming foul trouble to achieve victory. She also mentioned how much she appreciated her teammates, referencing that she is the only starting senior. After my final question, Jaelynn mentioned that the team is finally starting to come together, overcoming some early season struggles. She also touched base on the press that they have practiced, and how it was executed well tonight.
