Ronaldo Mejia and Leandro Espinoza scored one goal apiece to lift the Wilkes-Barre Wolfpack past the Wyoming Valley West Spartans 2-1 in a regular season boys soccer match Thursday in Kingston.
Mejia opened the scoring just under eight minutes in, converting a feed from Jason Espinoza at the 7:52 mark of the first half. Wyoming Valley West answered before the break when Noah Fetko found the net off an assist from Chase Evanofski at 28:31, leveling the match at 1-1 heading into halftime.
The Wolfpack retook the lead early in the second half when Leandro Espinoza scored off a pass from Kleydert Perez at the 41:39 mark, a goal that proved to be the difference.
Wyoming Valley West held an edge in corner kicks, forcing six to none for Wilkes-Barre, and goalkeeper Sergio Gonzalez made four saves to keep the Spartans within a goal throughout. Wilkes-Barre outshot Wyoming Valley West 13-10 overall, and goalkeeper Asman Assefa turned away one shot in the win.
The result moves Wilkes-Barre to 2-0 on the scoreboard for the match while handing Wyoming Valley West a narrow defeat despite generating more set-piece chances through corner kicks.
Both goal scorers for Wilkes-Barre were set up by teammates, with Jason Espinoza and Kleydert Perez each recording an assist. Evanofski provided the lone assist for Wyoming Valley West on Fetko's equalizer.
