SPRING BROOK TWP. — If Monday night’s District 17 Majors showdown at Aston Field was any indication, the road to a championship won’t come easy.
With momentum swinging back and forth for six innings, Dunmore Little League erased a four-run deficit before Kevin Kapmeyer delivered the game-winning RBI single in the bottom of the sixth inning, capping a dramatic 10-9 walk-off victory over West Scranton in one of the tournament’s most entertaining contests.
West Scranton wasted little time setting the tone.
After two runners reached in the opening inning, Luke Collins ripped a two-run double into the gap before KJ Abram followed with an RBI single to give WSLL an early 3-0 advantage.
Dunmore answered immediately.
Back-to-back hits and aggressive baserunning helped cut into the deficit before Carter Bantell lined an RBI single down the left-field line to even the game at 3-3 in the second inning.
The lead continued to change hands.
West Scranton reclaimed the advantage in the third as Garren Connor worked a bases-loaded walk before Abram delivered another RBI single to make it 5-3.
Dunmore responded once again.
Luciano Cintron blasted a two-run triple before Nick DeMuro followed with an RBI single, knotting the game at five.
West Scranton kept applying pressure.
A sacrifice fly from Liam O’Hora put WSLL back in front in the fourth, and the visitors stretched their lead to 9-5 in the fifth behind timely hitting throughout the lineup.
With their backs against the wall, Dunmore saved its biggest rally for last.
Trailing entering the sixth, Dunmore pieced together clutch hit after clutch hit. Max Foley started the rally with an RBI single before Brody McCarthy added another run-scoring hit to pull Dunmore within one. Moments later, Kapmeyer lined a single into the outfield to score the winning run, touching off a celebration at Aston Field.
Dunmore finished with 13 hits, while West Scranton answered with 15, as both offenses traded punches throughout the evening.
Cintron paced Dunmore’s offense, finishing 2-for-3 with two RBIs, including a momentum-changing two-run triple. Kapmeyer went 2-for-3 with the game-winning RBI, while DeMuro also collected two hits and drove in a run. Jacob Polishan doubled, scored twice, and earned the save after working two innings in relief, while Foley, Brody McCarthy and Carter Bantell each added RBI hits during the comeback.
West Scranton’s offense was relentless from top to bottom.
Jack Schalk finished a perfect 3-for-3 with a triple and scored three runs. Abram collected two hits and two RBIs, Collins doubled and drove home two, while Cullen Kopa and Connor Kinney each added two-hit performances. The visitors also wreaked havoc on the bases, swiping nine stolen bases in the contest.
Despite the loss, West Scranton’s relentless offensive attack helped produce one of the highest combined scoring and most exciting games of District 17 pool play.
Dunmore, meanwhile, showed the resilience championship teams often need, rallying from four runs down before delivering a memorable walk-off victory.
