Valley View's Offense Breaks Out in the 2nd Quarter, Rolls Past Delaware Valley 28-7
Friday night started as a defensive stalemate between Valley View and Delaware Valley. Both teams struggled to find room on the ground and through the air in the first quarter, and it looked like it might stay a low-scoring affair.
Then the second quarter hit, and Valley View's offense flipped a switch.
Jonathan Anuszewski punched it in from 7 yards out to get things going, and Braden Loff was good on the extra point to make it 7-0. It didn't take long for Valley View to strike again. Marco Ruby broke off a 65-yard house call, one of the longer runs you'll see all season in District 2, and Loff's kick made it 14-0 heading into the half.
Valley View kept the pressure on in the third quarter. Jeffery Wasilchak dragged a handful of Delaware Valley defenders into the end zone on a 13-yard touchdown run, and Loff's extra point pushed the lead to 21-0.
Delaware Valley got on the board in the fourth when Dylan Bannon scored from 2 yards out, with Matt Marotta's kick making it 21-7. But Valley View answered right back. Wasilchak punched in his second touchdown of the night from a yard out, and Loff capped off a perfect night kicking with his fourth extra point, sealing the 28-7 win.
By the numbers: Valley View out-rushed Delaware Valley 187 yards to 84 on 36 carries, while Delaware Valley leaned on the pass, throwing 23 times for 122 yards. Colin Dempsey went 7-for-10 through the air for Valley View. Ben Evans picked off a pass on defense for the Cougars' lone takeaway of the night.
Where they stand: Valley View came in at 3-2 overall and 1-1 in LFC Division I play, while Delaware Valley entered at 1-4 overall and winless at 0-2 in the division, so this one followed the script on paper. According to SportzWire's District 2 rankings, Dempsey has quietly been one of the most efficient passers in the conference this season, sitting top five in both passer rating and touchdown-to-interception ratio heading into the game. Loff's extra-point night also added to his spot among the area's scoring leaders at kicker, and Ben Evans continues to be one of Valley View's most productive two-way threats, ranking among the conference's top receivers in yards per catch.
