Two Trophies, Four Days: Scranton Prep’s Cole Powell is WIRED

SCRANTON — Winning has become familiar territory for Scranton Prep junior Cole Powell, but even by his standards, this was quite a week.

The Class of 2028 golfer captured two tournament titles in a four-day span, first winning the Bob Simons Classic at Elkview Country Club before breaking through for his first career AJGA championship.

Powell’s week started August 17 at the Bob Simons Classic, where Scranton Prep put together an impressive team showing that ultimately led to a playoff between Cavaliers. Powell delivered the deciding moment with an eagle in the playoff to capture the individual title.

Then he took that momentum on the road.

Competing at the AJGA Albany Junior presented by UHY, Powell opened with a 4-under 66 and never let up. He followed with consecutive rounds of 68, finishing the three-round event at 202 (-8) to secure his first AJGA victory.

66. 68. 68. Champion.

The performance adds another accomplishment to an already impressive résumé for Powell, who has been part of back-to-back PIAA state championship teams at Scranton Prep.

His swing coach, Alex Knoll, has watched Powell’s game continue to develop and believes confidence is a major part of what makes the young golfer so dangerous.

“Cole is an amazing talent with a great support system. When he plays with confidence and finds his comfort zone, you see what the result can be,” Knoll said.

A playoff eagle. An AJGA breakthrough. Two victories in four days.
