Trojans Break Through as Nanticoke Edges Tunkhannock in 14–12 Thriller

NANTICOKE — Greater Nanticoke Area found a way to finish the job Friday night.
In a tightly contested Wyoming Valley Conference matchup, the Trojans held off Tunkhannock for a 14–12 victory, earning their first win of the 2026 season.
After enduring difficult losses to Carbondale Area and Palmerton during the opening two weeks, Nanticoke responded with a much stronger defensive performance. The Trojans limited Tunkhannock to 12 points and did just enough offensively to escape with the two-point victory on their home field.
The result improved Greater Nanticoke Area to 1–2 and gave the program some much-needed momentum heading into the middle portion of its schedule.
Tunkhannock entered the night looking for its own breakthrough after losses to Dallas and Mid Valley. The Tigers produced their highest-scoring performance of the season and remained within striking distance throughout the game, but Nanticoke protected its narrow advantage and prevented the visitors from completing the comeback.
The 14 points matched Nanticoke’s previous season high, which came during a 62–14 loss at Palmerton. Friday’s difference was the Trojans’ defense, which responded after surrendering a combined 102 points over the first two games.
For Tunkhannock, the narrow defeat represented a significant improvement following a 42–0 season-opening loss to Dallas and a 28–13 setback against Mid Valley. The Tigers fell to 0–3 but showed they could compete in a close, low-scoring conference battle.
Both teams will return to nonconference play Friday, September 18. Nanticoke travels to Panther Valley, while Tunkhannock visits Old Forge.
For the Trojans, however, Friday night belonged to a group that stayed together following a challenging start and was rewarded with its first victory of the season.
