TUNKHANNOCK — In a matchup between two strong Wyoming Valley Conference softball teams, Tunkhannock showed why it has been one of the area’s toughest teams all season.

The Tigers improved to 16-1 Tuesday with an 8-0 win over Dallas, using a big fifth inning and a dominant performance from pitcher Michaela Howell to pull away late.

For much of the afternoon, the game stayed close. Tunkhannock held just a 1-0 lead after Kayden Bamberger brought home a run on a groundout in the second inning, while Dallas stayed within striking distance behind solid defense and pitching.

Everything changed in the fifth.

Tunkhannock erupted for seven runs in the inning, turning a tight game into a comfortable lead. Sarah Van Ness drove in a run with a sacrifice fly, Alli Kinney added a two-run single, Michaela Howell followed with a two-run double, and MaKenzie Bevan connected on a two-run home run to left field to cap the rally.

Meanwhile, Howell continued to control the game in the circle. The Tunkhannock pitcher threw a complete-game shutout, allowing just two hits while striking out 14 and walking two over seven innings.

Dallas collected hits from Alyssa Traver and Sydney Haydu, but the Mountaineers were unable to generate consistent offense against Howell’s mix of command and strikeout pitching.

Lucy Karp and Howell each finished with two hits for Tunkhannock, while Kinney, Howell, and Bevan each drove in two runs. The Tigers also played a clean game defensively without committing an error.

Dallas will travel to Crestwood on Thursday for its next game, while Tunkhannock is scheduled to host Wyoming Valley West on Thursday afternoon.
