DUNMORE — The Bucks wasted little time grabbing control of their District 2 Class 3A opening-round matchup.
Luis Arias stepped in during the bottom of the first and immediately gave Dunmore an early jolt, launching a two-run home run to center field that put the Bucks ahead 2-0 and energized the home crowd at Schautz Stadium.
From there, Dunmore kept adding pressure.
The Bucks pushed another run across in the third inning when Evan Mizenko delivered an RBI single to right after battling through a six-pitch at-bat. Dunmore continued to create opportunities throughout the night and later got additional breathing room when Mizenko crushed a solo shot to center in the fifth inning.
While the offense supplied the runs, Mason Stets handled the rest.
The right-hander turned in a strong postseason performance, working 6⅔ innings while allowing just one run, unearned, on five hits. Stets struck out six and walked two before Jackson Cady came on in relief to record the final out.
Dunmore finished with 10 hits and received contributions throughout the lineup.
Mizenko and Arias each collected two hits and drove in two runs, while Nate Grochowski added a pair of hits of his own. Stets also helped himself offensively with a triple and a run scored as the Bucks pieced together quality at-bats all game long.
Defensively, Dunmore also came through with a key double play to help shut down any potential Western Wayne momentum.
Western Wayne was led by Jameson McCollum, who drove in the Wildcats’ lone run. Damian Glackin, Jake Grodack, Andrew Boandl, Vinny Baldini and McCollum each collected a hit in the effort.
Now the challenge gets even bigger.
No. 3 Dunmore advances to Thursday’s District 2 Class 3A semifinal where the Bucks will travel to the Back Mountain for a matchup against No. 2 Lake-Lehman, with a district championship berth on the line.
