This evening, the Shamokin Indians boys' basketball team traveled to Mifflinburg, where they defeated the Wildcats 57-54 in a thriller.
Q1 -
Mifflinburg jumped out to a fast, 9-0 start, holding Shamokin scoreless during the first four minutes of play. During Mifflinburg's run, four Wildcats found the basket including Jackson Griffith, Grady Brubaker, Chad Martin, and Luke Brubaker. Shamokin Indian Christian Kokinski broke the ice with a three-pointer. Mifflinburg Wildcat Grady Brubaker responded with two made free throws, followed by a deuce from freshman Brennan Snyder (13-3 Mifflinburg). A couple of Indians then found the basket to cut the Wildcats to seven, but Luke Brubaker added points right back onto the lead with a layup. Shamokin's Cru Schroyer closed the quarter with a two-point shot (15-10 Mifflinburg).
Q2 -
The second quarter was much different than the first, as the Indians outscored the Wildcats by 12. The quarter began with traded baskets from both sides. Shamokin trimmed Mifflinburg's lead with big three-pointers from Colin Steinhart and Andrew Leffler. After Leffler's three, Colin Steinhart converted a free throw to tie the game at 23 a piece. Xaiver Paul followed Steinhart's free throw with two of his own for his 5th and 6th points of the night. Mifflinburg's Chad Martin then hit a three, but Shamokin put up a 6-0 run to close the 1st half (32-26 Shamokin).
Q3 -
The third quarter was split evenly as both sides scored 11. Cru Schroyer scored the Indians first points of the half, followed by a bucket from Jackson Griffith of Mifflinburg. Colin Steinhart then added two to the Indians lead before Xaiver Paul knocked down two foul shots, making him 6-6 at the line on the night. Down ten, Mifflinburg compiled a 9-0 run where two freshmen scored 6 of the 9 points: those freshmen being Hunter Bolick and Brennan Snyder. Shamokin then closed the quarter with buckets from Christian Kokinski and Colin Steinhart (Shamokin 43-37).
Q4 -
The fourth quarter was a thriller that all began with two buckets from Colin Steinhart. Christian Kokinski then added two more points onto the Indian's lead after Steinhart's field goals. Mifflinburg's Brennan Snyder got hot in the fourth quarter, scoring six points. In between Snyder's scoring, Colin Steinhart connected from range for his third three-pointer of the evening. From there, things began to tense up and both teams had opportunities at the free throw line. Jackson Griffith made the first free throws during crunch time, reducing Shamokin's lead to five (52-47 Shamokin). Colin Steinhart was then fouled by Jackson Marr, putting him on the line where he went one-for-two. Fouls were then committed everywhere by both sides, leading to more chances at the line. During this time, Xavier Paul and Cru Schroyer scored points for the Indians. Their points were split by an and-1 make from Jackson Marr. With under a minute to go, Brennan Snyder reached the line for the Wildcats after being fouled by Barnett Walsh of the Indians. Snyder made both, setting up a thrilling ending. Mifflinburg fouled Xaiver Paul, where he made just one foul shot during his trip to the line. At this point, Shamokin led by three points with seven seconds to go. Mifflinburg Wildcat Jackson Griffith threw up a fade away three-pointer as a time expired, but his shot hit the back iron and fell to the ground.
Conclusion -
Colin Steinhart and Xaiver Paul combined for 31 of Shamokin's 57 points tonight to pull through against Mifflinburg on the road. Steinhart grabbed 7 rebounds and was backed with physicality from Paul. Mifflinburg's Brennan Snyder was the bright spot for the Wildcats, but his 12 points wasn't enough to get his team over the hump.
Postgame Interview -
I met with player of the game, Colin Steinhart, after the win tonight and our conversation is logged below,
When asked about the final moments of the game, Steinhart responded stating that the team needed to stop fouling and limit Mifflinburg's three point shooting.
When asked how he shoots the ball so consistently, he responded with saying, "It's all about how we move the ball, get open, making the right passes, and stepping into shots".
When asked what this hard-fought road win meant to the team, Steinhart stated, "It gives us confidence, some team chemistry", later stating, "it will get us ready for next week",
