Sportzwire Athlete of the Week: Gavin Oprishko, Valley View Junior
Valley View junior Gavin Oprishko has earned recognition as Sportzwire’s Athlete of the Week for the week of April 6th, sponsored by Envy Electrical—and it’s easy to see why. A multi-sport athlete with a relentless drive to improve, Oprishko has emerged as one of the area’s most exciting track and field competitors while also making an impact on the football field.
Track has become Gavin’s true passion. Competing since seventh grade, he specializes in sprinting events, including the 100m, 200m, 4x100, and 4x400 relays. This season, he reached a major milestone by breaking his school’s 200m record, clocking an impressive 21.54 seconds and surpassing the previous mark of 22.8. The achievement reflects years of dedication and steady progression.
His success didn’t come overnight. Last season alone showcased his growing talent: he placed 4th in the 100m and 5th in the 200m at Districts, earned 3rd place in the 200m at the SPANGA conference meet, and delivered strong performances at the Walter Godek Invitational with a 3rd-place finish in the 100m and 2nd in the 200m. He also contributed to a winning 4x100 relay team at the Godek Twilight Invitational and helped his team break a meet record in the 4x100 at the Jordan Relays.
While track is now his main focus, Gavin’s athletic journey has been shaped by a wide range of sports. He wrestled from first through ninth grade, building toughness and discipline. He also played baseball through middle school before shifting his attention to track. Soccer was part of his life as well, which he continued through his sophomore year. This past fall, he added a new challenge—joining the football team for the first time. What began as a decision influenced by friends quickly turned into an opportunity, as Gavin worked his way into the starting lineup for the final two games of the season.
Looking ahead, Gavin has clear goals in mind. “I’d love to go to states,” he said. “Medals would be great, but just going there would be amazing!”
Behind his success is a strong support system. “My parents have helped me a lot, encouraged me to keep going, even when I wasn’t the best,” he shared. “My teammates—having good competition at practice has helped me. Valley View is a really competitive environment. Everyone there wants to win and it really elevates you to compete at a higher level.”
Off the track, Gavin continues to excel in the classroom, earning distinguished honor roll honors this year and last. He also gives back to his community by volunteering at a local firehouse, helping serve food during cookouts alongside a friend’s family.
With his record-breaking speed, multi-sport background, and strong work ethic, Gavin Oprishko represents the best of Valley View athletics—and his journey is far from finished.
