Spain Edges Argentina in Extra Time to Capture 2026 FIFA World Cup Title; Scranton Fan Zone Delivers Unforgettable Championship Weekend

SCRANTON, Pa. — The 2026 FIFA World Cup came to a thrilling conclusion Sunday as Spain defeated Argentina 1-0 in extra time to capture its second FIFA Men’s World Cup championship, closing the curtain on a memorable month of international soccer.
While the action unfolded at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, thousands of fans gathered in downtown Scranton for the PA World Cup Fan Zone, where Courthouse Square was transformed into a celebration of soccer, culture, and community.
The championship atmosphere extended far beyond the final whistle. Fans sporting jerseys from clubs and countries across the globe filled the square, watched the match together on the big screen, enjoyed interactive activities, and soaked in the energy that made the event feel like a true World Cup festival.
Spain also swept the tournament’s major individual honors. Captain Rodri earned the Golden Ball as the tournament’s best player, goalkeeper Unai Simón received the Golden Glove, and defender Pau Cubarsí was named Best Young Player. Argentina’s Lionel Messi earned the Silver Ball after another remarkable World Cup run, while France’s Kylian Mbappé claimed the Bronze Ball.
The weekend featured more than soccer.
Saturday’s festivities included a live performance by Hanson, whose iconic hit MMMBop had fans singing along ahead of the third-place match. Sunday’s championship celebration continued with an energetic performance from Tonic, providing the soundtrack before supporters turned their attention to the World Cup Final.
Families also enjoyed the ONVO Fun Zone, interactive activities for children, local food vendors, and community exhibits that showcased the welcoming atmosphere throughout the weekend.
