Southern Columbia Shuts Out Halifax, 2-0, in District Playoff Clash

HALIFAX, Pa. — Southern Columbia Area punched its ticket to the next round of postseason play Monday, using timely hitting and a dominant performance on the mound to defeat Halifax, 2-0, in a tightly contested playoff matchup.

The Tigers struck quickly, scoring the game's first run in the opening inning before adding an insurance run in the fifth. That proved to be all the offense Southern Columbia needed as senior right-hander Caden Hopper turned in a complete-game shutout.

Hopper was outstanding from start to finish, allowing just three hits over seven innings while walking two and striking out three. He needed only 71 pitches to navigate the Halifax lineup and never allowed the Wildcats to mount a serious threat.

Southern Columbia collected nine hits on the afternoon. Hopper helped his own cause at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored. Kole Myers contributed a triple and drove in a run, while Andrew Yost added an RBI double. Ethan Makowski also recorded a triple as the Tigers consistently put pressure on Halifax's defense.

The Tigers grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first inning and maintained that slim advantage through four innings before extending it to 2-0 in the fifth. Halifax's pitching staff kept the game within reach throughout. Sophomore Eli Miller worked 6 1/3 innings, surrendering two runs—only one earned—on nine hits while striking out three. Josh Zahurak recorded the final two outs in relief.

Despite the loss, Halifax received hits from Eli Peryea, Will Steinhauer and Ryder Tobias. Peryea and Eli Miller also drew walks, accounting for the Wildcats' only baserunners beyond the three hits.

Both teams played solid defense, combining for just one error in the game. Southern Columbia was flawless in the field, turning two double plays and finishing without a miscue.

In the end, Southern Columbia's combination of clutch extra-base hits and Hopper's shutout effort proved to be the difference as the Tigers secured the 2-0 victory and advanced in postseason play.
