North Penn-Liberty edged out Cowanesque Valley in a competitive non-conference softball game on Saturday, securing a 7-5 victory at Cowanesque Valley’s home field.
The contest remained scoreless through the first two innings before North Penn-Liberty broke the drought with two runs in the third. Cowanesque Valley's defense held firm through the fourth, but North Penn-Liberty added two more runs in the fifth to extend their lead.
The bottom of the fifth inning saw Cowanesque Valley’s bats come alive in a significant way, as they erupted for five runs to tie the game. Zeraya Wilson was a key contributor in this rally, hitting two doubles and driving in three runs. Emma Carl also contributed with a single that brought in a run, while Lilah LaBarron added an RBI to fuel the comeback. However, North Penn-Liberty responded in the top of the sixth with three runs, reclaiming a lead they would not relinquish. Both defenses then locked down, keeping the score unchanged through the final inning.
North Penn-Liberty’s offense was efficient, accumulating 14 hits with no errors in the field. Haley Litzelman led the charge with a standout performance, collecting three hits, including a home run, and driving in two runs. Julia Kaczynski also had a strong day at the plate, tallying three hits, one run, and one RBI, alongside a stolen base. K. Lightner added two doubles and two RBIs, while Madison Smith contributed two hits and two runs.
For Cowanesque Valley, despite the loss, Zeraya Wilson was a force offensively with three hits, including two doubles, one run, and three RBIs. Lilah LaBarron added two hits and an RBI, also successfully stealing a base. Cowanesque Valley committed three errors throughout the game.
On the mound, Elyna Booth pitched a complete game for North Penn-Liberty, allowing seven hits and five earned runs while striking out 12 batters. For Cowanesque Valley, Lilah LaBarron also pitched the entire game, yielding eight hits and seven runs, with four of them earned, and striking out three.
