SCRANTON, PA — Fresh off capturing the District 2 Class 4A championship, Scranton Prep continued its postseason momentum Friday night with a composed 65–48 victory over Schuylkill Valley in the opening round of the PIAA state tournament.
The Cavaliers showed patience and control throughout the contest, pulling away in the second half after a competitive opening stretch. Scranton Prep led 15–12 after the first quarter and held a narrow 26–24 advantage at halftime before delivering the decisive push in the third quarter. The Cavaliers erupted for 24 points in the period to seize control and never looked back.
Junior guard Packy Doherty led the way offensively with a game-high 25 points, knocking down five three-pointers while also converting four free throws. Senior Brody Martin added 15 points, and Charlie Skoff contributed 10 points to give Scranton Prep three players in double figures.
Schuylkill Valley was paced by Josiah Urbaez, who finished with 15 points, while Tanner Staus added 11 points.
Scranton Prep’s balanced scoring and disciplined defense proved to be the difference, particularly in the second half as the Cavaliers limited scoring opportunities while steadily extending their lead.
The victory continues a strong postseason run for Scranton Prep, which recently captured the District 2 Class 4A title with a win over Dallas. With the first-round win secured, the Cavaliers now move forward in the state bracket carrying confidence and momentum as they pursue a deeper run in the PIAA tournament.
