THROOP — Mid Valley’s offense erupted early and continued applying pressure throughout Friday’s District 2 Class 4A semifinal as the Spartans powered past Crestwood, 12-4, to move one win away from district gold.
The Spartans found production throughout the lineup, but Joey Romanosky was the engine that kept things moving all afternoon. The Mid Valley shortstop finished a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate with four runs scored and an RBI, consistently setting the table as the Spartans built separation.
Mid Valley delivered the decisive blow in the bottom of the second inning.
Jeremy Cali was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to bring home a run before Brett Yanoski followed with a bases-loaded walk to force in another. Romanosky then ripped a two-run single and Nick Hricenak added a two-run hit of his own as the Spartans exploded for six runs and seized complete control.
The Spartans continued to add on in the third inning.
Nick Mills brought in a run on a fielder’s choice before Jake Bondy worked a bases-loaded walk to extend the lead.
Crestwood attempted to battle back in the top of the third inning. Jaxson Fedak launched a three-run homer to cut into the deficit and bring life to the Comets’ dugout.
Mid Valley responded.
The Spartans added insurance over the middle innings and put the finishing touches on the victory in the sixth when Mills crushed a two-run homer to center field, stretching the advantage to 12-4.
Cooper Lukasavage picked up the victory on the mound for Mid Valley. The right-hander worked six innings, allowing six hits and four runs while striking out five and walking two.
Hricenak closed things out in relief with a scoreless seventh inning, allowing no hits and striking out one.
Mid Valley collected eight hits but also displayed tremendous patience at the plate, drawing 11 walks on the afternoon.
Romanosky led the offensive attack with his four-hit performance, while Mills drove in a game-high three runs. Hricenak added two RBIs and Bondy reached base repeatedly with four walks while scoring twice.
Crestwood was led by Fedak, who finished 2-for-3 with a home run and three RBIs. Miles McShea also homered for the Comets, while Jack Rodgers and Chase Galella each added hits.
With the win, Mid Valley advances to the District 2 Class 4A championship game where the Spartans will meet Wyoming Area in what has all the ingredients of a marquee title matchup. Two battle-tested teams with explosive offenses and a district championship on the line should set the stage for a thriller.
