Riverside’s Nelson Villafane Captures U17 World Championship, Makes Wrestling History for Puerto Rico

At just 15 years old, Riverside standout Nelson Villafane continues to prove that he belongs among the world’s elite.
Competing at the United World Wrestling U17 World Championships in Baku, Azerbaijan, Villafane claimed the 45-kilogram freestyle world title with an impressive 7-1 victory over defending U17 Greco-Roman World Champion Rylen Wax of the United States. The win not only earned Villafane a coveted world championship but also made him the first Puerto Rican wrestler to capture a U17 world title.
The championship bout was the latest chapter in an emerging international rivalry between Villafane and Wax. The pair has met on some of wrestling’s biggest youth stages over the past two seasons, splitting memorable battles at the U15 Pan American Championships before Wax narrowly edged Villafane twice earlier this year at the U17 Pan American Championships.
This time, however, the outcome belonged to the Northeastern Pennsylvania phenom.
Villafane controlled the match from the opening whistle, building a 2-0 advantage before the break through relentless pressure and disciplined defense. In the second period, he answered every challenge, adding a takedown before finishing strong with late points to secure a commanding 7-1 decision and the gold medal.
The victory was more than just a world title, it was a historic moment for Villafane and Puerto Rico.
“It felt amazing to win, especially to be the first-ever U17 World Champion for Puerto Rico,” Villafane said. “It also felt great to represent the country where my family comes from.”
His success has been built through years of relentless dedication. Villafane began wrestling at four years old and maintains a demanding routine that starts before sunrise with strength training alongside his father before school. His days continue with training sessions at Mat Assassins Wrestling Club five days a week, while weekends are often spent competing against the nation’s best.
The world title is the latest milestone in an already decorated career and comes just weeks before Villafane begins the next chapter of his wrestling journey. The incoming freshman will compete this season as part of the West Scranton wrestling co-op while continuing to represent Riverside, bringing world-class credentials to one of District 2’s premier programs.
For Northeastern Pennsylvania wrestling, Villafane’s triumph is another reminder that the region continues to produce talent capable of competing, and winning on the biggest stages in the sport. At just 15 years old, the future has never looked brighter.
