Valley View Cougars advanced in the 4A State Quarterfinals after a 2-0 victory over Archbishop Carroll Patriots on Thursday at Patriots Park. The Cougars secured their runs on a day where pitching was a highlight for both teams.
Valley View broke the scoreless tie in the fourth inning when an error by Archbishop Carroll allowed a run to score. Abbi Call pitched a complete game shutout for Valley View, allowing just one hit and recording an impressive 14 strikeouts.
Archbishop Carroll's pitching effort was led by Olivia Zanetich, who completed seven innings. She yielded two runs, only one of which was earned, on seven hits, while issuing two walks and tallying three strikeouts.
The Valley View offense saw Zoie Krupovich lead the way with three hits in three at-bats, also crossing the plate once. Nevaeh Evans contributed with two hits and scored a run. Cora Castellani drove in a run for Valley View, going 1-for-4 at the plate.
For Archbishop Carroll, Camryn Hannon registered the team's only hit of the game, a double. The Patriots defense also turned one double play during the contest.
