Penn State Loses 2027 Quarterback Commit Will Wood to Boston College

Penn State Loses 2027 Quarterback Commit Will Wood to Boston College

By: Landyn Empet | SportzWire | October 19, 2026

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. - Penn State football lost a quarterback commit on Sunday, October 18, as Will Wood announced he would no longer be joining the Nittany Lions. Instead, the Class of 2027 recruit will stay closer to home and play for Boston College under head coach Bill O'Brien.

Wood, a three-star quarterback from Xaverian Brothers High School in Massachusetts, originally committed to Penn State in May. He chose the Nittany Lions over Boston College but has now decided to join the Eagles.

Wood shared his decision in a post on X, thanking Penn State head coach Matt Campbell and showing support for the program.

"Thank you to Coach Campbell and Penn State for their belief in me. I have zero doubt they will turn things around and deserve the fanbase's patience," Wood wrote.

"For me, I have decided that it's best to stay home and play for Coach Bill O'Brien and the Boston College Eagles."

The news comes at a tough time for Penn State. The Nittany Lions have lost four straight games, including a 21-18 loss to Michigan on Saturday. Penn State is now 0-4 in Big Ten play as Campbell looks to get the team back on track.

Wood was an important part of Penn State's 2027 recruiting class. According to the 247Sports Composite rankings reported by StateCollege.com, he is ranked as the No. 3 player in Massachusetts and the No. 50 quarterback in the country.

During his junior season at Xaverian Brothers, Wood helped lead his team to an 11-2 record and another Massachusetts Division I state championship. He was also named the Catholic League MVP.

Boston College had been one of Wood's top choices before he committed to Penn State. Eagles head coach Bill O'Brien, who previously coached at Penn State from 2012 to 2013, continued to recruit Wood even after his decision in May.

For Wood, staying close to home and playing for O'Brien played a major role in his decision.

His departure leaves Penn State without a quarterback commit in its 2027 recruiting class. However, the Nittany Lions still have four-star quarterback James Armstrong committed for the Class of 2028.

Penn State will now have to look at other options as the coaching staff continues to build its future roster.

While Wood made it clear he still believes in Campbell and the program's direction, losing a quarterback commit adds another challenge for Penn State during an already difficult season.

The Nittany Lions will look to move forward both on the field and in recruiting as Campbell works to turn things around in Happy Valley
