Pittston Area opened the Class 5A district playoffs with authority Tuesday night, defeating Nanticoke Area 60 to 37 behind a balanced scoring effort and steady defense on their home floor.
The Patriots jumped out to a 15 to 10 lead after the first quarter and never looked back. A strong second quarter pushed the advantage to 34 to 17 at halftime, and Pittston Area continued to control the pace in the second half, outscoring Nanticoke 26 to 20 over the final two quarters to seal the win.
Brennan Callahan led the way with 16 points, consistently getting to the basket and finishing in traffic. John Jadus added 14 points, doing much of his work inside the arc, while Lucas LoPresto contributed 11 points, including two three pointers. Aidan Clarke chipped in eight points as the Patriots showcased their depth.
Pittston Area finished with 25 field goals and seven three pointers, while holding Nanticoke to 13 made field goals. The Patriots also limited second chance opportunities and controlled the defensive glass throughout the night.
For Nanticoke Area, Loudon Mullery scored 12 points, knocking down four shots from beyond the arc to keep the Trojans within striking distance early. Mathias Mitchell added 11 points and Ethan Yendrziewski finished with seven.
With the win, Pittston Area improves to 12 and 11 on the season and advances to the district semifinal round.
