BLOOMSBURG, Pa. - North Penn-Mansfield senior Michael Knefley is heading to the PIAA State Cross Country Championships after capturing the District IV Class AA boys' individual title Thursday, October 29.
Knefley finished the championship race in 16 minutes, 8.9 seconds, securing first place in a competitive field of 113 runners. His performance was just enough to edge Hughesville senior Wyatt Laubacher, who finished second in 16:10.0, only 1.1 seconds behind.
The race was tightly contested throughout, with Knefley working his way toward the front of the pack. After trailing Laubacher at multiple checkpoints, Knefley found another gear in the closing stretch, overtaking his competition to secure the district championship.
The victory marks a major accomplishment for the North Penn-Mansfield senior, who will now represent the Tigers at the state level.
Knefley also helped lead Mansfield to a ninth-place team finish with 231 points. Sophomore David Graf followed with a strong performance of his own, finishing 19th overall in 17:32.8.
While Danville Area claimed the team championship with 73 points, Knefley’s individual victory gave North Penn-Mansfield one of the day’s biggest highlights.
For Knefley, the championship comes during his final high school cross country season. After competing throughout his high school career, the senior now has an opportunity to close out his time with the Tigers against some of Pennsylvania’s top distance runners.
With the District IV title secured, Knefley will turn his attention to the PIAA Class AA State Championships, where he will look to carry his momentum into the final race of his senior season.
