The Nanticoke Trojans scored twice in the second half to hold off a late push from the Western Wayne Wildcats, winning 2-1 in a nonleague matchup on Thursday.
Elizabeth Larson broke the scoreless deadlock in the 45th minute, converting an assist from Ella Alles to give Nanticoke a 1-0 lead to open the second half. Claire Wisnosky extended the advantage in the 72nd minute, putting the Trojans ahead 2-0.
Western Wayne answered in the 79th minute when Mackenzie Chearney scored off an assist from Aliyah Gregory, cutting the deficit to one goal. The Wildcats were unable to find an equalizer in the closing minutes, and Nanticoke closed out the 2-1 victory.
The first half ended scoreless, with neither team able to find the back of the net despite the action that followed.
Nanticoke controlled much of the play, outshooting Western Wayne 13-7 and holding a 7-2 edge in corner kicks. Despite facing fewer shots, Nanticoke goalkeepers Penelope Serrano and Lillian Larson combined for six saves. Western Wayne goalkeeper Delany Kaub was busy in net, turning away 11 shots to keep her team within striking distance.
The win improves Nanticoke's standing in regular-season play, while Western Wayne will look to regroup after falling just short despite Kaub's strong showing between the posts.
