Wyoming Valley West continued to make its case as one of the Wyoming Valley Conference’s most dangerous field hockey teams, earning a 3-1 victory over Lackawanna Trail behind a huge performance from Ava Mullery.
Mullery was the difference-maker for the Spartans, accounting for all three Valley West goals and finishing the night with a hat trick. She opened the scoring in the first quarter, giving the Spartans an early advantage as Valley West looked to establish control against a talented Lackawanna Trail squad.
The Lions answered in the third quarter when Emma Thomas found the cage to even the game at 1-1, setting up a pivotal final period. That was when Mullery took over. She struck twice in a span of just 1:11 during the fourth quarter, quickly turning a deadlocked game into a two-goal Valley West advantage.
Charlotte Yelen played a major role in the offensive production as well, assisting on all three of Mullery’s goals. On the other end, Kaylah Sewell turned away six shots in goal to help the Spartans protect the lead and close out another quality victory.
The win adds another impressive result to a strong stretch for Wyoming Valley West. With victories over teams such as Wyoming Seminary, Dallas, Lake-Lehman and now Lackawanna Trail, the Spartans continue to show they can compete with—and beat—some of the best teams in the area.
As the postseason approaches, Valley West is becoming a team nobody will want to see on the other side of the field. With Mullery providing finishing ability, Yelen creating opportunities and the Spartans continuing to find ways to win against quality competition, Wyoming Valley West appears to be hitting its stride at the right time.
