SCRANTON — Through four innings, little separated Montrose Area and Dunmore in a championship matchup that carried postseason intensity from first pitch to final out.
Then came the fifth inning.
After Dunmore battled back to even the score, Montrose answered immediately with four runs in the bottom half of the frame and went on to defeat the Lady Bucks, 6-2, to claim the District 2 Class 2A Softball Championship Wednesday night at the University of Scranton South Side Complex.
The victory capped off another milestone in a special season for the Meteors, who also captured the Lackawanna League Division 3 championship and entered the district playoffs as the AA tournament’s top seed.
Montrose first broke through in the bottom of the fourth inning when MycKenna Kublo singled home a run before Cara Evans followed with an RBI double to center field, giving the Meteors a 2-0 lead.
Dunmore responded in dramatic fashion in the top of the fifth.
With the Lady Bucks searching for momentum, Jackie Brown delivered one of the game’s biggest moments, racing around the bases for an inside-the-park home run that tied the game at 2-2 and energized the Dunmore dugout.
The tie was short-lived.
Montrose quickly regained control in the bottom of the inning as Kyleise Kublo delivered an RBI single before Libby Bush lined a two-run single to extend the lead. A passed ball later in the inning pushed the advantage to 6-2.
From there, freshman pitcher Alayna Mott settled back in and closed out the championship effort inside the circle.
Mott worked all seven innings, allowing two runs on nine hits while striking out four and walking two. During the victory, the freshman also reached the 100-strikeout milestone for the season.
Dunmore continued to apply pressure offensively throughout the game, collecting nine hits as Aubrey Mizenko led the way with a three-hit performance. Paige Ancherani added two hits, while Brown drove in both Lady Bucks runs.
Rachel Walsh started inside the circle for Dunmore, allowing six runs, five earned, over 4 1/3 innings. Ancherani provided strong relief work, tossing 1 2/3 scoreless innings with three strikeouts.
Montrose finished with nine hits of its own and played a clean defensive game without committing an error. Evans led the defensive effort with 10 chances in the field.
For a young Meteors roster, Wednesday night added another chapter to a season already filled with accomplishments and one that may still have more ahead.
Now, with district gold secured, Montrose turns its attention toward the PIAA Class 2A state tournament, where a matchup with Northwest Area appears to be next on the bracket.
