Elk Lake found its rhythm early Friday and never let it go.
Behind a complete performance from Brayden Miller and steady production throughout the lineup, the Warriors defeated Lackawanna Trail 8-2 in the District 2 Class 2A semifinals, moving one step closer to district gold.
Miller impacted the game from the opening innings and continued to deliver all afternoon.
After Elk Lake grabbed the game’s first run in the opening inning when Lucas Benscoter drew a bases-loaded walk, the Warriors built separation in the second.
Miller got things started with a two-run single before Stephen Newhart followed with an RBI double. Benscoter added another run-scoring single as Elk Lake quickly built a multi-run advantage and put pressure on Lackawanna Trail early.
The Warriors continued adding insurance as the game moved along, and Miller delivered again in the sixth inning, driving home two more runs with another clutch single to extend the lead.
While the offense supplied the runs, Miller controlled things on the mound.
The right-hander worked six innings, allowing just three hits and two runs while striking out 10 and walking three. He consistently worked out of trouble and prevented Lackawanna Trail from generating any sustained momentum.
Stephen Newhart came on in relief and finished things off with a scoreless seventh inning, striking out three and not allowing a hit.
Elk Lake totaled nine hits in the win and also demonstrated patience at the plate, drawing eight walks.
Alden Felker sparked the offense from the leadoff spot, collecting three hits in four at-bats and helping set the pace offensively. Benscoter and Cohen Orlandini each reached base multiple times, while the Warriors remained aggressive on the bases and collected four stolen bases.
Lackawanna Trail was led by Tyler Jervis, who produced two hits from the No. 8 spot in the lineup.
With the victory, Elk Lake advances to Friday’s District 2 Class 2A championship game at the University of Scranton, where the Warriors will square off against Wyoming Seminary with district gold on the line.
