Sunbury, PA -
Lewisburg brought the energy to Shikellamy High School tonight, rumbling into a fast start that put them ahead early, nearing sealing the game after just one quarter of play.
A full recap is available below -
Q1 -
The game kicked off with possession in favor of Mount Carmel. Jude Lazicki missed a layup and Lewisburg immediately responded with a Cooper Mowry three-pointer. Lewisburg controlled the early minutes, opening the game on a 12-2 scoring run. During the run, Mount Carmel committed five fouls. Four of Lewisburg's 12 points came from Rebira Jemama at the free throw line. After the run, Mount Carmel continued to allow bucket after bucket, but Jude Lazicki was the bright spot as he scored all nine of the Tornadoes points during the quarter. Cortland Michaels and Rebira jemama each had eight points for the Green Dragons after one quarter. Jemama also displayed his athleticism by getting up high and blocking two plus shots for the Green Dragons. Lewisburg led 24-9 at the end of one quarter.
Q2 -
Lewisburg's scoring slowed during the second quarter, but their defense refused to let up. Logan Pizzoli opened the quarter by scoring his first two points of the game for Mount Carmel. Jack Siegel and Leon Tucker II responded for Lewisburg as they each scored baskets in between a Mount Carmel turnover. With 4:50 left in the quarter, Jaylen Walker came up with a big steal to keep momentum in favor of the leading Green Dragons. Down 18, Mount Carmel scored four straight points to cut the Green Dragon's lead to 14 at the break (32-18 Lewisburg).
Q3 -
Mount Carmel opened the third frame on a 5-0 run, providing hope to a quiet Tornado student section. Leon Tucker II shut all hope down with a three-pointer from the right wing. Both teams traded small punches throughout the rest of the third quarter, including two converted free throws in favor of the Tornadoes. Leon Tucker II scored five points during the quarter and helped Lewisburg finish on a 4-0 scoring run. The Green Dragons led by 15 entering the final quarter.
Q4 -
The final quarter opened on a Jude Lazicki layup. Nazir Meredith then responded with a physical layup of his own as he had continued to do all night long. Both teams then traded buckets back-and-forth and neither team could gain an advantage over the other. Mount Carmel's fouling skyrocketed as it did during the first quarter, which ultimately gave Lewisburg tons of foul shots. Lewisburg knocked down four free throws during the quarter and finished on a 4-point scoring run, entirely established by Rebira Jemama. Jemama finished with 13 points on the night as Lewisburg defeated Mount Carmel, 58-42.
Postgame -
I met with Cortland Michaels after the conclusion of the contest and asked him just a few questions. The highlights of our conversion are italicized below.
When asked what fueled the 24 point first quarter, Cortland asserted, "We've learned from the past few games to push the pace". Michaels was also pleased with the performance of his teammates tonight.
When asked what excites him about playing in his first District Final later this week, Cortland stated, "It excites me a lot, but I'm going to treat it like every other game. I think I need to come into it with the same mindset I've had the past few games, and just keep going".
The Green Dragons will take on Montoursville in the District Final later this week.
