A classic back-and-forth battle came down to the absolute wire on Thursday, as the Lake Ariel Agway All Stars secured a thrilling 9-8 walk-off victory over the Wayne Highlands All Stars. The game was deadlocked at eight apiece in the bottom of the seventh inning when Ethan P showed ultimate patience at the plate, drawing a bases-loaded walk to push across the winning run and seal the dramatic victory for Lake Ariel.
The contest was a see-saw affair from the opening pitch. Wayne Highlands wasted no time getting on the scoreboard in the top of the first inning when Parker G laced an RBI single. Lake Ariel answered quickly in the frame, capitalizing on an Oliver S RBI single to knot the score at 1-1.
Wayne Highlands recaptured the lead in the top of the second, driving in runs courtesy of an Asher A single down the left-field line and a defensive miscue on a wild pitch. True to the nature of this matchup, the lead did not last long. In the bottom half of the second, Lake Ariel stormed ahead with a four-run outburst. Bases-loaded walks from Ethan P and Smith H, followed by a clutch two-run groundout from Henry H, swung the momentum and put Lake Ariel up 5-3.
The offensive slugfest continued into the fourth inning. Wayne Highlands recaptured the upper hand by putting up three runs, utilizing a walk by Zayn G, an RBI groundout from Asher A, and another run scoring via a wild pitch to make it 6-5.
Trailing late, Lake Ariel caught a crucial break in the bottom of the sixth inning. Capitalizing on a costly Wayne Highlands defensive error, Lake Ariel pushed a run across to tie the game at 7-7, sending the contest into extra innings.
Wayne Highlands manufactured a run in the top of the seventh to take an 8-7 advantage, utilizing an error to put themselves three outs away from a win. However, Lake Ariel refused to go quietly in the bottom half. Linden H drew a crucial bases-loaded walk to tie the game at eight, setting the stage for Ethan P to step up and draw the game-winning, walk-off walk.
Both teams showcased grit on the mound. Sheamus O earned the start for Lake Ariel, striking out two and giving up five runs on six hits over three and one-third innings. Aiden H and Linden H provided vital relief efforts out of the bullpen, with Linden H throwing two innings of one-hit ball to keep things within reach. For Wayne Highlands, Cole L got the nod, allowing two hits and four earned runs over one and one-third innings while striking out two. David H turned in a spectacular performance in relief for Wayne Highlands, striking out an incredible 13 batters over four and two-thirds innings.
