KINGSTON, Pa. — Lake-Lehman delivered one of the biggest upsets of the District 2 field hockey postseason Thursday evening, knocking off top-seeded Wyoming Seminary 1-0 in the Class A semifinals to secure a spot in the district championship.
The fifth-seeded Black Knights eliminated a Wyoming Seminary squad that entered the contest with just one loss on the season, setting up a championship showdown against second-seeded Wyoming Area.
The victory also served as redemption for Lake-Lehman, which had fallen to Seminary by an identical 1-0 score during their regular-season meeting on October 12.
This time, however, the Black Knights came away with the shutout, ending Seminary’s district championship hopes and advancing to the title game.
Wyoming Seminary entered the semifinal riding momentum from an 11-0 quarterfinal victory over Hanover Area. Lake-Lehman, however, prevented the Blue Knights from carrying that offensive production into Thursday’s matchup.
Awaiting Lake-Lehman in the championship is a Wyoming Area team that earned its own dramatic semifinal victory Thursday afternoon.
The Warriors defeated Lackawanna Trail 1-0 behind a late fourth-quarter goal from Claudia Rehill, who redirected a pass from Shannon Kearns into the cage with just 2:40 remaining.
Wyoming Area controlled much of the contest, outshooting Lackawanna Trail 16-4 and holding a 12-1 advantage in penalty corners. Despite that pressure, the Warriors needed Rehill’s late goal to secure the victory.
The win sends Wyoming Area to its ninth consecutive District 2 Class A championship appearance, where the Warriors will be seeking their third district title.
Now, the stage is set for a championship matchup between two teams coming off shutout semifinal victories.
Lake-Lehman and Wyoming Area will meet Wednesday, November 4, at 6:30 p.m. at Wilkes-Barre Area High School, with the District 2 Class A championship on the line.
For Lake-Lehman, the opportunity comes after eliminating the tournament’s top seed. For Wyoming Area, it represents another chance to add to its championship history
