MONTROSE — One big inning was all the Montrose Meteors needed to turn a close game into a championship trip.
After carrying a three-run advantage into the third inning, Montrose erupted for six runs and rolled to an 11-1 victory over Elk Lake in the District 2 Class 2A semifinals Friday.
With the win, Montrose advances to the District 2 Class 2A championship game where the Meteors will meet No. 2 Dunmore on Wednesday at 6 p.m. at the University of Scranton.
Montrose’s offense wasted little time finding rhythm.
The Meteors struck in the second inning after Cara Evans singled home a run, Aly Legg produced a two-run groundout and Anna Evans added an RBI single to push Montrose ahead 4-1.
Then came the inning that completely shifted the game.
Montrose exploded for six runs in the third, turning a competitive contest into a runaway.
Alayna Mott started the scoring with a sacrifice fly before Legg delivered a two-run double. Moments later, Kyleise Kublo provided the knockout, racing around the bases for an inside-the-park three-run home run that blew the game wide open and gave Montrose a commanding 10-1 advantage.
Kublo powered the middle of the lineup and finished 2-for-3 with three RBIs, while Libby Bush delivered a perfect afternoon at the plate, going 3-for-3 with three runs scored.
Cara Evans added two hits and an RBI, while Legg drove in four runs and Anna Evans also contributed an RBI hit.
Montrose piled up 11 hits and consistently pressured Elk Lake throughout the afternoon.
Mott was equally sharp in the circle.
The right-hander worked all five innings, allowing just four hits and one unearned run while striking out five and issuing no walks.
Elk Lake’s lone run came in the second inning when Maddy Ely singled home a run.
Ely and Aleece Greenley each collected two hits to pace the Warriors offensively.
But the afternoon belonged to the Meteors.
Now Montrose turns its attention toward another challenge with a district championship on the line, as the Meteors prepare for a showdown with No. 2 Dunmore Wednesday night at the University of Scranton.
