Weatherly’s return to the PIAA boys basketball state tournament came with plenty of meaning. The Wreckers were making their first appearance in states since the 2005 to 2006 season, ending a two decade wait for another shot on the state stage.
Once the game tipped, Plumstead answered every push and steadily built control on the way to a 60 to 45 victory.
Plumstead opened with 12 points in the first quarter and added 13 more in the second to take momentum into halftime. Weatherly stayed within reach early, scoring 10 in the opening quarter and 11 in the second, but Plumstead continued to produce on the offensive end after the break.
The third quarter proved to be one of the turning points. Plumstead scored 16 while Weatherly was held to five, allowing Plumstead to create the separation it needed. Both teams scored 19 in the fourth, but by then Plumstead had already done the damage.
Noah Kephart led Plumstead with 21 points and delivered a strong performance at the foul line, going 7 for 9. Mason McCuen added 20 points and was perfect on his free throws, finishing 4 for 4. Julian Desiato also reached double figures with 11 points, giving Plumstead three key scorers in double figures.
Weatherly was led by Brandon Davis, who scored 11 points and went 3 for 5 from the line. Ian McKeegan added 10 points and converted both of his free throw attempts. The Wreckers showed life in the final quarter, but Plumstead’s balance and consistency across all four quarters proved too much to overcome.
For Weatherly, the night marked the end of a memorable run that brought the program back into the state bracket for the first time in 20 years. Plumstead, meanwhile, moves on after a composed performance fueled by timely scoring and steady free throw shooting.
