SUNBURY, PA - PHAC Semi-Final Action
The Hughesville Lady Spartans basketball team took down the Shikellamy Braves tonight in a PHAC tournament semi-final game.
Maddie Smith helped the Spartans overcome a slow start by pouring in 12 first half points. Smith finished the game with 20 points and four rebounds, Division 1 track & field commit, Kylie Temple finished with eight points and three rebounds on the evening. Allyssa King added 7 points and five rebounds. Every Hughesville starter had at least four rebounds.
Shikellamy was entirely fueled by Lily Fatool. She scored 30 of Shikellamy's 42 points, and did a great job of getting the ball to her teammates. Kelsey Deitrich scored eight points and gathered eight rebounds during the game.
The Spartans were held scoreless through the early minutes, but Maddie Smith scored six during the first quarter to give Hughesville a one-point lead at the conclusion of the quarter. Maddie added another six during the second quarter to give the Spartans a 25-23 lead at halftime. Lily Fatool scored 13 points during the first half for the Braves.
The Braves were held scoreless through the first five minutes of the second half, before Fatool helped them finish with eight. The game remained close during the fourth quarter, but Allyssa King helped the Spartans seal the game with foul shots.
Postgame -
I met with Maddie Smith after the game, and we spoke for about a minute. Her key statement is italicized below.
"It was a total team effort", She also gave lots of credit to her teammates for their efforts. She mentioned the gameplan for Lily Fatool, stating that she got her points, but the Spartans did enough to get the victory.
Hughesville takes on 23-0 Central Columbia on Friday night at 6:00pm.
