Some action from the District IV Class 3A baseball playoffs tonight for the top-seeded Wellsboro Hornets as they welcomed the No. 8 Bloomsburg Panthers. It was a dominant performance from the home team, as Wellsboro secured an 11-1 victory, extending their impressive winning streak to 14 games and improving their record to 18-2.
Wellsboro wasted no time getting on the scoreboard. Marek Mascho singled in the first inning, driving in the game's first run. The Hornets continued to build their lead in the second when Reed Richardson doubled to center field, pushing the score to 3-0. The game truly opened up in the bottom of the third as Wellsboro exploded for five runs on just two hits. Kody Enck started the rally with an RBI single, followed by another RBI single from Reed Richardson. Bloomsburg's defense then struggled, allowing three additional runs to cross the plate on an error, solidifying Wellsboro's control of the game.
The Wellsboro offense was firing on all cylinders throughout the contest, collecting 11 hits and boasting a collective batting average of .407. Reed Richardson was a major contributor, driving in three runs with his 2-for-3 performance, which included a double. Marek Mascho also had a standout day at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI. Kody Enck added two hits in three at bats, contributing an RBI and a run. Griffin Morral showcased his speed with a stolen base. Defensively, Wellsboro was impeccable, turning two double plays and playing error-free baseball, with Coen Tennis leading the team with nine defensive chances.
On the mound, Maxwell Mascho delivered a strong outing for Wellsboro. He pitched five innings, allowing only one earned run on five hits, while impressively striking out nine batters and issuing just one walk, effectively neutralizing Bloomsburg's offense.
For the Bloomsburg Panthers, despite the lopsided score, Andrew Petock showed his hitting ability, leading the team with two hits in two at bats and scoring their only run. Brayden Holbert contributed Bloomsburg's lone RBI, going 1-for-3 with a double. Conner Haydt also managed a hit, which was a double, and Ryan Traugh added a single. Bloomsburg's collective batting average for the game was .278.
On the pitching side for Bloomsburg, Tyler Polizzi started and pitched two and two-thirds innings, giving up six runs (three earned) on seven hits, striking out two and walking one. Jack Bettinger came on in relief for one and one-third innings, allowing three runs (one earned) on two hits, with three walks and one strikeout. Conner Haydt finished the game, surrendering two runs (one earned) on two hits. Bloomsburg's defense struggled, committing four errors throughout the game, which certainly hampered their efforts.
Bloomsburg's defeat brings their season to a close with a 12-10 record, while Wellsboro advances in the playoffs on the strength of their commanding performance.
