WILKES-BARRE — When the lights were brightest, Hazleton Area didn’t just show up.
They took over.
From the opening possession Friday night at Mohegan Arena, the Cougars played like a team on a mission, rolling past Scranton 67-30 to capture the District 2 Class 6A championship in convincing fashion.
There were no nerves. No hesitation. No doubt.
Hazleton came out firing, jumping to a 23-2 lead in the first quarter and setting a tone that never changed. The Cougars were flying around defensively, turning stops into transition buckets and feeding off the energy of the championship crowd.
By halftime, the lead had grown to 41-15.
Kaitlyn Bindas was steady and confident all night, pouring in 24 points and knocking down three shots from deep. Sophia Benyo added 11 points, while Alexis Reimold chipped in 11 as well, giving Hazleton a balanced attack that Scranton simply couldn’t contain.
But this win wasn’t just about scoring.
It was about effort. It was about discipline. It was about a team that trusted one another and executed on every possession.
Scranton battled behind 15 points from Chrissy Jacklinski, but Hazleton’s defensive pressure made every look difficult. The Cougars contested shots, controlled the glass, and never allowed the Lady Knights to find any rhythm.
By the fourth quarter, the celebration had already started to build. The bench was on its feet. The crowd was buzzing. The message was clear.
Hazleton Area didn’t just win a championship Friday night.
They earned it — from start to finish.
And they left absolutely no doubt who the best team in District 2 Class 6A is.
