EUGENE, OR — Dallas junior Hunter Pitcavage saved his best for last.

Competing against nearly 50 of the nation’s top javelin throwers at Nike Outdoor Nationals on Sunday, Pitcavage unleashed a personal-best throw of 224 feet on his final attempt to secure the national championship and bring home gold for the Mountaineers.

The winning throw not only earned Pitcavage the biggest victory of his career, but it also elevated him into elite company nationally. His mark of 224 feet would rank No. 2 in the United States this season and further solidifies his status as one of the premier javelin throwers in the country.

The performance caps off a remarkable junior campaign that saw Pitcavage dominate throughout the spring season.

Earlier this month at the PIAA Class 3A Track & Field Championships in Shippensburg, Pitcavage earned a silver medal after finishing second in a field of 29 competitors with a throw of 198 feet, 3 inches. Throughout the season, he continued to build on an already impressive résumé while adding to his legacy at Dallas High School.

Pitcavage currently holds the Dallas High School javelin record and is ranked No. 2 in Pennsylvania. With Sunday’s breakthrough performance on the national stage, he has now established himself as one of the top returning throwers in America heading into his senior season.

For most athletes, a 200-foot throw is a career-defining milestone. For Pitcavage, it became the launching point for something even bigger.

Now a national champion and owner of one of the country’s top marks, the Dallas standout heads into his final year of high school competition with his sights set on even greater accomplishments.
