Goal-Line Stand Sparks Northwestern Lehigh

Northwestern Lehigh built an early rhythm through the air and leaned on key second half stops to earn a 28-16 victory over third-ranked Valley View on opening night at John Henzes Veterans Memorial Stadium.
The Tigers stepped into Peckville and turned to quarterback Trey Snyder for his starting debut under center. Snyder handled the hostile road atmosphere with composure, generating 225 passing yards and three touchdowns through the air to guide the reigning state champions through a physical four-quarter battle.
Northwestern Lehigh opened the scoring midway through the first quarter when Snyder linked up with Brady Zimmerman on a 15-yard touchdown strike, followed by a Grayson Smith extra point. Valley View confronted immediate difficulty when starting quarterback Caleb Brown exited due to injury on the opening offensive series. Sophomore Colin Dempsey stepped in to take the snaps and delivered an instantaneous spark. Dempsey uncorked a deep pass to classmate Cash Roe, who turned the reception into an 81-yard touchdown sprint. Braden Loff converted the point-after kick to level the score at 7-7.
The offensive duel continued into the second period. Snyder found Zimmerman behind the secondary for a 43-yard scoring connection, edging the Tigers back in front. The Cougars answered with a disciplined drive before the break, culminating when Dempsey tossed a 14-yard touchdown strike to senior wideout Ben Evans. Loff split the uprights once more to send both teams into the locker rooms locked at 14-14.
Coming out of halftime, Northwestern Lehigh regained the upper hand. Snyder floated his third touchdown pass of the evening to Michael Lagowy for a 22-yard score, giving the Tigers a 21-14 advantage in the third quarter. Valley View marched deep into Northwestern Lehigh territory seeking another equalizer, but the Tigers defensive unit stood firm, halting the Cougars at the 1-yard line. Pinned on their own goal line, Northwestern Lehigh could not prevent Mason Mitchell from breaking into the backfield to register a safety, trimming the deficit to 21-16.
The Cougars were unable to convert the ensuing possession into points, returning the ball to the Tigers. Northwestern Lehigh capitalized with a clock-draining march, capped by a 5-yard touchdown run from Zimmerman to secure the final margin.
Valley View travels to face Crestwood next Friday, while Northwestern Lehigh heads home to take on Northern Lehigh. Under the glowing Friday night lights of Peckville, it was Northwestern Lehigh that found the timely answers in the trenches to walk away with a hard-earned opening victory.
