East Stroudsburg North Captures State Title at Unified Track and Field Championships

Shippensburg, PA – The Special Olympics Pennsylvania Unified Champion Schools Track and Field State Championships concluded Memorial Day Weekend at Shippensburg University, with East Stroudsburg North claiming the overall team title amidst steady, light rain that persisted throughout much of the two-day event. Held in conjunction with the PIAA Track and Field Championships, the competition showcased impressive athleticism and teamwork. East Stroudsburg North accumulated 63 points, securing the championship ahead of Spring Grove (55 points) and Wyoming Valley West (48 points).

East Stroudsburg North’s triumph was built on a series of strong performances across both field and track events. Jazlene Perez opened the scoring with a first place finish in the Long Jump Division 1, covering 1.64 meters. Victoria Lourenco also took first in the Long Jump Division 2 with a distance of 2.57 meters. On the track, Alicia Wilson sped to a first place in the 100 Meters Division 3, clocking 1:23.03, while Malik Mitchell secured a first place in the 100 Meters Division 6 with a time of 14.45. Darrius Gage continued the winning streak in field events, taking first in the Long Jump Division 6 with a 4.00 meter jump. Javonna Ponton showcased her throwing prowess with a first place in the Mini Javelin Division 6, achieving a distance of 20.38 meters. The consistent effort extended to the mid-distance events as Jeremy Frangipane captured first place in the 800 Meters Division 2 with a time of 2:50.10. Other notable placements included Za’Nyra Smith’s second place in the Long Jump Division 3, Isaiah Virella’s second place in the 100 Meters Division 7, Olivia Joan Brockmann’s second place in the 100 Meters Division 1, and Maddison Eggar’s second place in the Shot Put Division 4.


Wyoming Valley West demonstrated depth and consistent quality, with 11 of their 12 team members contributing points by finishing in the top three of their divisions. Raheem Blanton delivered a standout performance, recording the fastest 100 meter time overall with a first place finish in Division 8 at 12.21 seconds. Blanton also excelled in the Long Jump, taking first in Division 8 with a remarkable 5.17 meters, marking the best overall long jump. Chelsea Hummel also secured two first place finishes, winning the 100 Meters Division 5 in 14.54 seconds and also taking first in the Mini Javelin Division 7. Gavin Burridge contributed a first place in the Mini Javelin Division 2. Jamie Evans added to the team’s success with a first place in the 100 Meters Division 1A and a second place in the Shot Put Division 1. Lily Eckstein earned a first place in the Mini Javelin Division 4. Meghan Singer earned a second place in the Long Jump Division 6, and Angel George-Umoh secured a second place in the Shot Put Division 3. Kaylah Sewell, Javian Fernandez, and Billy Bell also made their mark with third place finishes in their respective events.

Valley View, despite competing with 10 athletes due to two absences, displayed tremendous resilience. After finishing Day One in last place following the field events, the team rallied on Day Two with strong track performances to climb to sixth overall with 40 points, surpassing three larger teams. Jeffrey Wasilchak delivered the best overall time in the 400 meters, winning Division 6 in 57.53 seconds, and added a second place in the Shot Put Division 8, which was the second-best overall effort in the event. John Mulkerin secured a first place in the Shot Put Division 5 and a second place in the 400 Meters Division 3. Sophia Davies sprinted to a first place in the 100 Meters Division 1. Tyson Sisen was a key contributor, earning second place in the 800 Meters Division 3 (the second-best overall time) and a second place in the Mini Javelin Division 9 (the second-best overall throw). James Terrance took second place in the 800 Meters Division 1 and third in the Long Jump Division 2. Ava Kielar added a second place in the Long Jump Division 1 and a third place in the 100 Meters Division 2. Aubree Black finished second in the 100 Meters Division 4, and Miranda Troue placed second in the Shot Put Division 2. Jack Loftus also earned points with a third place in the 100 Meters Division 7. The spirited comeback showcased the team's determination and collective effort.
