Dream Season Comes to a Close: Abington Heights Falls to Shaler Area in PIAA Class 5A Championship

The Abington Heights Lady Comets saw a dream season come to an end Thursday afternoon at Penn State’s Beard Field, falling to the Shaler Area Titans, 10-0, in the PIAA Class 5A State Championship.

The matchup featured two of Pennsylvania’s hottest teams entering the final game of the season. Abington Heights arrived in State College riding a 20-game winning streak, while Shaler entered having won 21 consecutive contests.

Ultimately, the Titans’ disciplined approach at the plate and timely hitting proved to be the difference.

After a scoreless opening inning, Shaler broke through in the bottom of the second. Olivia Geraltowski drew a bases-loaded walk, Jayla Antomachi followed with a walk of her own, Addison Aleski produced a run-scoring fielder’s choice, and Alyssa Schaffold added a sacrifice fly to give the Titans a 4-0 lead.

Shaler extended the advantage to 5-0 in the third inning when Geraltowski lined an RBI single down the right field line.

Abington Heights continued to battle behind senior ace Adrianna Condrad, but the Titans delivered the decisive blow in the fifth inning. With the bases loaded, Haley Machajewski launched a grand slam to left field, stretching the lead to 10-0 and putting the championship firmly in Shaler’s control.

Bria Bosiljevac, an Indiana University commit, was outstanding in the circle for the Titans. The right-hander allowed just one hit over five innings, struck out eight, and walked one while keeping the Comets’ offense off balance throughout the afternoon.

Condrad worked four innings for Abington Heights, allowing six runs, five earned while striking out six. Brianna Bustos entered in relief during the fifth inning and finished the game for the Lady Comets.

Isabella DeRiggi accounted for Abington Heights’ lone hit, finishing 1-for-2 with a double. Eva Kane reached base via walk, but the Comets were unable to generate sustained offensive pressure against Bosiljevac and the Titans’ defense.

Machajewski led the offensive attack with four RBIs on her grand slam, while Geraltowski added two RBIs. Antomachi, Giada Colamarino, Alyssa Schaffold, and Bosiljevac each recorded hits as Shaler finished with six hits and drew six walks.

While the final score was not the ending Abington Heights envisioned, it does little to diminish one of the most successful seasons in program history.

The Lady Comets captured a District 2 championship, advanced through a challenging state tournament bracket, won 20 consecutive games entering the title game, and earned the opportunity to compete for a state championship on Pennsylvania’s biggest softball stage.

For the seniors, Avery Venesky and Isabella DeRiggi, Thursday marked the final chapter of a remarkable run. For the underclassmen, it provided valuable experience and a standard for future seasons.

The final result belonged to Shaler Area, but the journey and accomplishments of the 2026 Abington Heights Lady Comets will not soon be forgotten.
