District 4 Track and Field Championships Open with Record Performances and State Qualifiers

The opening day of the PIAA District 4 Track and Field Championships delivered fast times, record-breaking performances, and dramatic competition Thursday, May 14, as athletes across Classes AA and AAA battled for district medals and coveted spots at next week’s state championships.

With Day 2 set for today under bright sunny skies, teams and individuals remain in position to cap off memorable seasons and continue their postseason journeys.

Relay Teams Set the Tone

Distance relays highlighted the opening evening, with several teams posting state-qualifying performances and district records.

In the Girls AA 4x800 relay, Hughesville stormed to the district title in a record-setting 9:14.64 behind the quartet of Emelia Wolfe, K. Temple, G. Fortin, and K. Temple. Lewisburg Area finished second in 9:41.61, while Warrior Run took third in 9:43.62.

The Girls AAA 4x800 relay also featured a record-breaking effort as Williamsport Area dominated in 9:17.61. Isabella Sanders, Madeline Sanders, L. Hofstrom, and M. Veldhuis led the Millionaires to another impressive district crown. Danville Area placed second in 9:44.66.

On the boys side, Lewisburg Area captured the AA 4x800 title in 7:53.37 with Hughesville close behind in 7:56.28. Warrior Run earned bronze in 8:01.16. In AAA competition, Midd-West claimed gold in a state-qualifying 7:53.08, while Williamsport Area took second.

Sprint Prelims Produce Fast Times

Thursday’s sprint preliminaries established several favorites heading into finals day.

In Girls AA 100-meter prelims, Wellsboro’s Piper Hoprich posted the fastest qualifying time at 12.20, followed by Hughesville freshman Casey Schultz at 12.49. Mifflinburg’s Makenna Fogle also advanced comfortably.

Shikellamy senior Jilly Deivert led the Girls AAA field with a blazing 12.18, while Athens Area’s Abby Burgess followed closely at 12.46.

The Boys AA 100-meter prelims featured one of the deepest fields of the day. Hughesville senior Spencer Stine led all qualifiers in 10.89, while Mifflinburg’s Landen Murray clocked 11.02 and Towanda’s Jazick Brown ran 11.08.

In AAA, Shamokin Area showcased its sprint depth as Ryan Bickert led the field in 10.79 and teammate Logan Steele qualified in 10.86. Williamsport’s Alex Takach also impressed with a 10.83 preliminary victory.

Hurdlers Shine in Qualifying Rounds

Several hurdle specialists delivered standout performances Thursday evening.

Bloomsburg’s Hannah Magill led the Girls AA 100-meter hurdles prelims in 15.63, while Troy’s Kylee Roy also broke 16 seconds at 15.95.

Williamsport Area’s Aubrey Phillips-Cobb posted one of the fastest times of the entire meet in the Girls AAA 100 hurdles, cruising to a state-qualifying 14.66.

Hughesville dominated the Boys AA 110 hurdles prelims with Kaviko Faulkner and Brendan Wolfgang qualifying first and second in 15.42 and 15.43 respectively.

Williamsport’s Kye Diakite topped the AAA boys hurdle field in 14.87, one of the top marks of Day 1.

Distance Events Feature Records and Breakthroughs

The 3200-meter finals produced some of the meet’s most memorable moments.

Lewisburg’s Baylee Espinosa shattered the Girls AA district record with a winning time of 10:39.06, edging Wellsboro’s Lauren Kosek, who also broke the previous district mark in 10:43.00.

Williamsport twins Madeline and Isabelle Sanders put on a dominant display in the Girls AAA 3200, both breaking the district record. Madeline captured the championship in 10:43.01, while Isabelle finished second in 10:47.03.

In Boys AA competition, Canton Area’s Lawrence Halbfoerster earned district gold in 9:23.98, while Northwest Area’s Michael Fritz followed closely in 9:26.17.

Midd-West’s Grant Boop claimed the Boys AAA 3200 title in 9:43.12, narrowly defeating Athens Area’s Graham Wanck.

Field Events Deliver Championship Moments

Field event athletes also made headlines throughout Thursday’s action.

Southern Columbia’s Ethan Reed launched the javelin 205-7 to win the Boys AA title and easily surpass the state qualifying standard.

Canton Area’s Alexis McRoberts broke the district record in the Girls AA discus with a throw of 140-1, while Lewisburg’s Ziva Williams also earned a state-qualifying mark at 128-4.

In the Boys AAA triple jump, Shikellamy’s Hunter Bordner soared 46-0.75 to capture gold ahead of Selinsgrove’s Matthew Stebila and teammate Thomas Pollock. All three surpassed the state qualifying standard.

Williamsport Area excelled in the jumps, highlighted by Isabelle Morrow winning the Girls AAA high jump at 5-5 and also capturing the triple jump title. Tevin Williams added another championship for the Millionaires by clearing 6-5 to win the Boys AAA high jump.

Shikellamy continued its strong field-event showing as Aaron Bucher won the Boys AAA pole vault at 14-6 and Sarah Bronowicz captured the Girls AAA pole vault title.

Team Standings

After Day 1, Lewisburg Area leads the Girls AA standings with 50 points, while Hughesville and Williamson are tied for second with 13.

Williamsport Area sits atop the Girls AAA standings with 87 points, followed by Shikellamy with 54.5 and Selinsgrove with 46.

In Boys AA competition, Danville Area leads with 23 points, narrowly ahead of Southern Columbia and Mount Carmel Area, both with 21.

Shikellamy built a commanding lead in Boys AAA with 74 points. Williamsport Area follows with 48, while Athens Area sits third with 21.5.

Looking Ahead to Day 2

Championship races, relay finals, and additional field events are set to conclude today as athletes continue chasing district titles and state meet berths.
