District 4 Sportzwire Spotlight: Muncy Senior Bodie Moyer Reaches 500 Saves in Storied Soccer Career

For Muncy senior goalkeeper Bodie Moyer, soccer has never simply been another activity on the calendar. It has been a constant presence in his life for more than a decade.
Moyer, who recently became the first goalkeeper in Muncy school history to record 500 saves, has been playing soccer since he was 5 years old. He has also been the starting goalkeeper for all four years of his high school career.
And while his high school soccer career is nearing its final whistle, Moyer has plenty of memories to look back on.
“I’ve always been raised with the mindset to always finish what you start, whether you’re motivated to do it or not,” Moyer said.
That philosophy has carried him through years of practices, games, victories, disappointments and plenty of bruises along the way.
Soccer has always been part of his life
Moyer was introduced to soccer at a young age through AYSO, where his father coached him until he was about 10 years old.
In those early years, Moyer’s father took a different approach to the game.
“He played everyone in every position,” Moyer recalled.
That experience eventually exposed Moyer more closely to the goalkeeper position when he was around 8 to 10 years old. After COVID, his new AYSO team needed a goalkeeper, giving him an opportunity to take on the position more seriously.
The rest, as they say, is history.
Soccer is the only sport Moyer plays today, but that was not always the case. He tried wrestling in third grade and played basketball from fourth through eighth grade.
He left wrestling after one year, joking that his third-grade ego had been broken.
Looking back, however, Moyer admits he sometimes wishes he had stayed with it.
His focus ultimately remained on soccer, where he found not only a sport he enjoyed but also a community of people who became an important part of his life.
One unforgettable game
Over the years, Moyer has experienced his share of memorable games, but one matchup against Montgomery stands out.
It was a home game and the first game of the season. Moyer remembers having what he describes as a “crazy goalie day.”
One particular play remains especially memorable—and for the opposing player, probably unforgettable for a different reason.
An opposing player broke away toward the goal on a fast break. Both players were racing toward the ball, with the opponent looking to head it into the net and Moyer trying to clear it.
They both went up for the header.
Instead of the ball being the only thing that made contact, the opposing player's mouth struck Moyer’s head.
The result? The other player lost a tooth.
To this day, Moyer says, the tooth has never been found.
More than saves
For Moyer, however, soccer has never been only about making saves.
One of the things he values most is the opportunity to make connections with people.
He particularly enjoys the games in which his team is not expected to win but manages to come away victorious.
“There are games where you weren’t projected to win and then do, and get to share that with everyone,” Moyer said.
Those moments, he explained, have a way of putting everything else into perspective.
“Everything bad that happened gets faded and you don’t really remember that anymore,” he said. “You remember the good.”
Moyer also appreciates the respect that can come from opponents. He said it means something when opposing coaches recognize his play and acknowledge the effort he has put into the game.
His support system has been equally important.
“The biggest people that encourage me are my parents,” he said.
He also credits one of his defenders and that player's father for encouraging him to continue playing this season.
A record four years in the making
Moyer's 500th save is more than a number. It represents four years of stepping onto the field as Muncy’s starting goalkeeper and countless hours of practices and games.
Reaching the milestone recently made him the first person in Muncy school history to reach 500 saves.
For a goalkeeper, the position can be unforgiving. A save can be the difference between keeping a game tied and falling behind. It requires focus, toughness and a willingness to put yourself in harm’s way.
Moyer has done that repeatedly throughout his high school career.
His approach to soccer reflects the same commitment he applies elsewhere in his life: if he signs up for something, he sees it through.
“If you sign up for something, you see it all the way through,” he said.
A student-athlete with a future ahead
Although soccer has occupied a significant part of Moyer’s life, athletics are only one part of his story.
He is a high-honor student and a member of the National Honor Society. Through the National Honor Society, he also tutors and helps younger athletes with soccer.
His accomplishments extend into the technology classroom as well. During both his sophomore and junior years, Moyer placed first at regionals in Material Processes through TCA, or Tech Club.
After graduation, Moyer plans to attend lineman school.
As for soccer, he is realistic about what comes next.
“As sad as it sounds, this is the end of the road for soccer,” he said, adding that he could potentially play in a recreational league someday.
For now, though, Moyer is finishing the final chapter of a soccer career that began when he was just 5 years old.
From playing every position in AYSO to becoming Muncy’s four-year starting goalkeeper, to making the 500th save in school history, the game has given Moyer plenty of stories to carry with him.
And when he eventually walks away from competitive soccer, he will take more than statistics with him.
He will take the connections, the lessons, the unexpected victories and the memories that made the difficult moments fade away.
For Moyer, perhaps that is what finishing what you start is really about.
