District 2 Sportzwire Spotlight Athlete: Emersyn Brown Does It All for Nanticoke Area

NANTICOKE, PA. — For Nanticoke Area senior Emersyn Brown, staying busy is simply part of the game. Between field hockey, cheerleading, cross country and track, Brown has built a high school career around athletic versatility, dedication and a passion for competing. Now, as the District 2 Sportzwire Spotlight Athlete, she is being recognized for her accomplishments on the field, in the classroom and throughout her school community.

While many athletes focus on one sport at a time, Brown has taken on the challenge of balancing three during the fall season alone. With limited numbers of athletes signing up for some programs, she has found a way to participate in cheerleading, cross country and field hockey simultaneously — a demanding schedule that reflects her willingness to step up and make the most of every opportunity.

Still, when asked which sport is her favorite, Brown didn't hesitate.

“Definitely field hockey,” she said.

It's a sport that has been part of her life since she was around eight years old, shaping not only her athletic career but also many of her friendships and experiences.

“I've just been playing it the longest, my life since around 8 has revolved around it,” Brown said. “Just like all the people I've met through it, all my friends, and it keeps me active.”

That lifelong commitment has paid off in a historic way for the Nanticoke Area standout.

In September, while playing against Abington Heights, Brown scored her 67th career goal, breaking the school's all-time scoring record previously held by Grace Reed. She has continued adding to that total and currently has 88 career goals.

Her scoring success has also translated into a milestone in overall production. On Oct. 13, Brown reached 200 career points, marking another memorable achievement in her high school field hockey career.

The accomplishment comes after a strong junior season, when Brown earned All-State honorable mention recognition. With her senior campaign providing even more opportunities to build on her success, she has continued to establish herself as one of Nanticoke Area's leading athletes.

Her future in the sport is already taking shape, too. Brown has verbally committed to Bloomsburg University, where she plans to continue her field hockey career next year.

For an athlete whose life has revolved around the sport for more than a decade, the opportunity to play at the collegiate level is a natural next step.

More Than Just Field Hockey

Although field hockey holds the top spot, Brown's athletic identity extends well beyond the turf.

Cheerleading has been another important part of her high school experience. She has participated all four years, building friendships and finding another way to be involved in school athletics.

“I really like cheer. I've made a lot of friends and we have a lot of fun,” she said.

That sense of connection has been a recurring theme throughout her high school career. Whether competing in field hockey or cheering on others, Brown has valued the relationships she has developed through sports just as much as the accomplishments.

Cross country, on the other hand, has been a slightly different experience.

Brown admits she has a love-hate relationship with the sport, and she's candid about one of the reasons why.

She doesn't particularly like running. We both laughed.

Nevertheless, she continues to participate, adding another layer to an already packed fall schedule. Her willingness to keep showing up, even for a sport that isn't necessarily her favorite, speaks to her determination and desire to stay involved. Track rounds out her athletic résumé, though Brown approaches it with a more relaxed mindset.

“I just do track for fun,” she said.

Together, the four sports have given Brown a diverse high school athletic experience, allowing her to challenge herself in different ways while forming friendships across multiple teams.

A Support System That Starts at Home

Behind Brown's accomplishments is a strong support system, including someone who played a particularly important role in introducing her to the sport she loves most.

When asked who she looks up to and who encourages her, Brown pointed to her sister, Allie.

“My sister Allie,” she said.

Allie was the person who got Emma involved in field hockey and has remained a steady source of encouragement throughout her journey.

“She got me into the sport,” Brown said. “She's always supported me through everything, always makes me feel I can do anything I set my mind to.”

That encouragement has helped Brown navigate the challenges of balancing multiple sports, academics and the expectations that come with being a record-setting athlete.

Her sister's influence is a reminder that athletic success often begins with the people who inspire us to try something new and continue believing in ourselves long after that first step.

Excellence Beyond Athletics

Brown's commitment doesn't stop when she leaves the field or finishes a practice.

A high-honors student, she has also earned a place in the National Honor Society, demonstrating that her dedication extends into the classroom.

She has previously participated in Nanticoke Area's Key Club, an organization that gives students opportunities to volunteer and serve their community.

Balancing demanding athletic schedules with academic responsibilities requires organization, discipline and time management — qualities Brown has continued to demonstrate throughout her high school years.

Her involvement in multiple sports, along with her academic achievements and community participation, paints a picture of a student who has made the most of her time at Nanticoke Area.

A Legacy Still Growing

As Brown prepares to close the chapter on her high school career, she leaves behind a record-breaking legacy in field hockey and memories built through four years of cheerleading, cross country and track.

Breaking the school's all-time scoring record was a milestone worth celebrating. Reaching 200 career points added another highlight to an already impressive résumé. And earning All-State honorable mention recognition helped solidify her place among the area's top players.

But Brown's story is about more than statistics.

It's about discovering a passion at a young age and sticking with it. It's about the friendships formed through competition, the family members who offer encouragement and the willingness to take on challenges across multiple sports while maintaining strong academic performance.

With a commitment to Bloomsburg University awaiting her after graduation, Brown has an exciting new chapter ahead.

For now, she continues to represent Nanticoke Area with the same enthusiasm and determination that have defined her high school career — one goal, one game and one season at a time.

As the District 2 Sportzwire Spotlight Athlete, Emersyn Brown stands out not only for what she has accomplished, but also for the dedication, versatility and support system that have helped her get there.
