District 2 Softball Quarterfinal Predictions

With the regular season over and the brackets revealed, it’s time for playoff softball. Six champions will be crowned on the road to Penn State, which begins today. Here’s a look at how every quarterfinal matchup could shake out.

The A bracket only has four teams, so the bracket will start in the semifinals.

AA: Mountain View vs Dunmore, Lackawanna Trail vs Holy Redeemer, Blue Ridge vs Elk Lake

Top-seeded Montrose gets a bye to the semifinals. The 2-4 seeds, Dunmore, Holy Redeemer and Elk Lake have home-field advantage, and also have the benefit of facing teams that were five or more games under .500 on the season. Dunmore beat Mountain View 11-0 on the road to close the regular season. Blue Ridge and Elk Lake split the season series, but the Lady Warriors won the rematch at home 8-2 and have won six of seven entering the postseason.

Predictions: Dunmore defeats Mountain View, Holy Redeemer defeats Lackawanna Trail, Elk Lake defeats Blue Ridge

AAA: Lakeland vs Carbondale, Western Wayne vs Riverside

The top two seeds in Lake-Lehman and Mid Valley earned automatic byes to the semifinals. Carbondale beat Lakeland on the road 2-1 in the regular season and won 10 of its final 13 games. Western Wayne and Riverside faced off twice, with the road team winning each time. The Wildcats won two of three to end the year, whereas the Vikettes ended the season losing five straight. I’ll trust history from the season series to decide this toss up.

Predictions: Carbondale defeats Lakeland, Western Wayne defeats Riverside

AAAA: Nanticoke vs Tunkhannock: Hanover Area vs Valley View, Berwick vs Wallenpaupack, Dallas vs Wyoming Area

Tunkhannock enters the playoffs as the No. 2 team in the SportzWire coaches’ poll and appears to be on a collision course with Valley View once again. Valley View, the reigning state champs, return with several key players from that title-winning team. Wallenpaupack may have an 11-9 record, but seven of those losses came to SportzWire top 10 teams in Mid Valley, Valley View, Abington Heights and North Pocono. Berwick comes in at 10-10, which includes two forfeit wins over MMI Prep. Wyoming Area and Dallas met in the season opener, which saw the Lady Warriors win 11-1 in five innings. Both teams have improved since, but the edge still goes to Wyoming Area.

Predictions: Tunkhannock defeats Nanticoke, Valley View defeats Hanover Area, Wallenpaupack defeats Berwick, Wyoming Area defeats Dallas

AAAAA: Shikellamy (D4) vs Pittston Area, Delaware Valley vs Crestwood

Abington Heights and North Pocono earned first-round byes after stellar regular seasons. Pittston enters the playoffs having won four of five, with the only loss in that stretch coming against Tunkhannock. The Patriots will face a Shikellamy team that went 4-15, but also won three straight before dropping the regular-season finale. Crestwood won seven of eight to end the year, with the only loss being against Pittston. Delaware Valley struggled against a tough division and non-conference schedule. Four of its six wins came against a Scranton Prep team that missed the playoffs and a Scranton team that went 5-14.

Predictions: Pittston defeats Shikellamy, Crestwood defeats Delaware Valley

AAAAAA: Wyoming Valley West vs Hazleton, Wilkes-Barre Area vs Scranton

Two games that are rematches from the regular season. Hazleton swept Wyoming Valley West by a combined score of 28-4, and Scranton knocked off the Wolfpack 9-7 at home on May 11. Wilkes-Barre Area beat Scranton in the quarterfinals last year, so expect the Lady Knights to be back for revenge. The winners will face Williamsport and West Scranton.

Predictions: Hazleton defeats Wyoming Valley West, Scranton defeats Wilkes-Barre Area.
