The District 2 Softball Championships are now official. 12 teams will compete for six trophies and more importantly, six berths in the state tournament, one per classification. All six games will take place across Tuesday and Wednesday, May26 and May 27. Here’s a look at each championship game and a prediction for who comes out on top.
Playoff Predictions Record: 21-4
Semifinal Predictions Record: 11-1
AAAAAA: West Scranton vs Williamsport
Williamsport returns to the championship game looking to win its third straight title. West Scranton is back in the title game for the first time since the 2022 AAAAA championship. Both teams scored 10 runs in their semifinal wins and the offense should be plentiful in this matchup.
The Millionaires are the top seed and have dominated all season long. They are 17-3 and scored at least 10 runs in 10 games this season. Two of their losses were by two runs or less and the other loss was 12-5 against Tunkhannock. The Millionaires also allowed one run or less in 10 games this season as well. They have a well-balanced attack on both sides of the diamond.
West Scranton made it to the championship game after a 10-4 win over Hazleton in the semifinals. Mia Tallo and Laney Mackie lead the offense with batting averages of .469 and .455. Tallo has mashed four home runs this year which leads the team.
Williamsport enters as the favorite because of their resume this season and being an all around complete team. West Scranton has the offense to compete, but Williamsport has too much firepower for the Invaders to overcome.
Prediction: Williamsport defeats West Scranton
AAAAA: North Pocono vs Abington Heights
A rematch from last year’s championship that the Lady Trojans won 5-4. The Lady Comets took both regular season matchups, which was also the case last season entering the championship game.
Abington Heights is 20-1 off the heels of an 8-0 semifinal win over Crestwood. The Lady Comets only loss was 6-4 at Loyalsock Township on April 11. Avary Brister is batting .645 with eight home runs. Adrianna Condrad, a Syracuse commit, hits for a .514 average with six homers and threw for 134 strikeouts so far this season.
North Pocono is 16-5 with a 2-1 win over Pittston Area in the semifinals. Avarie Roscioli is the top hitter with a .547 batting average and four homers. Amelia Bell bats .411 and has a 1.99 ERA, she will be the counter to Condrad in the circle.
Both teams have ace pitchers and it showed up in the 3-2 Abington Heights win on May 15. I expect the Lady Comets to continue their dominant run not only in this game, but deep into June.
Prediction: Abington Heights defeats North Pocono
AAAA: Valley View vs Tunkhannock
The game many people have circled on their calendar since the preseason. This is the fifth straight season the Lady Cougars and Tigers will meet in the district title game. The last district championship for Tunkhannock was 2022 when the Tigers lost in the state championship. Valley View enters as the reigning state champions looking for a fourth straight district title.
Tunkhannock is 21-1 on the season with the only loss coming against Chardon, a school in Ohio, at The Ripken Experience in Myrtle Beach. The Tigers went undefeated against District 2 and several AAAAAA non-district opponents, including Parkland and Northampton from District 11 and Williamsport. MaKenzie Bevan set the single-season record for home runs with 11, including two in the district semifinals against Dallas. Michaela Howell has taken over in the circle as a freshman, with an ERA of 1.81 and 189 strikeouts.
Valley View is 19-3 on the year, with all three losses coming against North Pocono and Abington Heights. The Lady Cougars were shutout in both games against the Lady Comets. The offense has gotten life in the playoffs, scoring 28 runs in eight innings. Valley View still has plenty of key pieces from last year’s state championship team, including pitcher Abbi Call. Call has pitched 29 consecutive scoreless innings.
Both teams are state championship caliber and it’s a shame one’s season will end. Both teams have run-ruled their playoff opponents, so this should be an exciting game. As for a prediction, followers of this series know the rules, someone has to beat the champs before I pick against them.
Prediction: Valley View defeats Tunkhannock
AAA: Mid Valley vs Lake-Lehman
Another district championship rematch from last season. Both teams return their starting pitchers but have to replace some key offensive pieces. The Black Knights led 4-2 last year before the Spartans rallied for four runs across the 6th and 7th innings to win 6-4.
The Black Knights are 19-2 after their 10-0 semifinal win over Riverside. Pitcher Hannah Chipego had 12 strikeouts in the win, which helped set a new all-time WVC strikeouts record. Chipego’s ERA is 0.50. She’s also batting .612 with four home runs, second on the team behind Kaitlyn Brudnicki’s six. The pitching is elite and the offense is scary good.
Mid Valley has an ace of their own in Ava Hazleton. The junior has a 1.92 ERA with 195 strikeouts on the year. The key for the Spartans will be trying to unlock their offense. They scored 12 runs against Carbondale in the semifinals but will face a tough task with Chipego. Mid Valley has the pieces with Natalie Hricenak and Angela Laskowski stepping up.
This will be a pitcher’s duel that likely comes down to who can get the big hit. Both teams have the offense to get it from anywhere. I’ll go with the Black Knights because their offense has shown up in every game this season, whereas Mid Valley has struggled in their losses to generate offense.
Prediction: Lake-Lehman defeats Mid Valley
AA: Dunmore vs Montrose
Two teams that met earlier this year with the Lady Bucks winning 5-4 at home. Both teams will bring the offense as has been evident throughout their runs so far.
Montrose went 16-2 with the regular season, with the only losses coming to Riverside and Dunmore. Kyliese and MycKenna Kublo lead the team in most offensive categories. Kyliese leads the team in home runs with seven. This is an offense that can pop off at any time.
The Lady Bucks led Holy Redeemer 7-1 in the third inning of their semifinal matchup. The Lady Royals tied the game in two innings before Dunmore scored the winning run on a sacrifice fly in the 6th. Rachel and Ava Walsh pace the offense, batting .444 and .439 respectively. Rachel also leads the team in ERA at 3.03 and 73 strikeouts, the same amount as Paige Ancherani.
Dunmore beat Montrose earlier this year, and the Meteors struggled against the Lackawanna League Division 2 teams they faced. Both teams have a potent offense, but the Bucks have the deeper rotation and have faced tough opponents that prepared them for this stage.
Prediction: Dunmore defeats Montrose
A: Old Forge vs Holy Cross
Another rematch from last season’s championship game, the Lady Crusaders swept the Blue Devils in the regular season. The first meeting was 6-5 in Dunmore, the second meeting was 12-0 in Old Forge.
The Lady Crusaders are 17-3 and their only losses came against Abington Heights, Mid Valley and District 1 powerhouse Bristol. Ava Schmidt is one of the top pitchers in the district with a 1.47 ERA and 176 strikeouts. Schmidt is also one of the top hitters alongside Peyton Graboske, Claire Helring, Jules Galella and Lily Kolcharno. The offense has as good a 1-5 as any team in the state.
Old Forge enters at 15-6. The Blue Devils are the underdogs, but took the Lady Crusaders to the limit and beat Mid Valley earlier this year. Lilianna Lenceski, Arianna Davitt and Caroline Revello spearhead the offense and Kamryn Notari holds things down in the circle.
The Lady Crusaders are the reigning champions and one of the best teams in District 2 this season. The Blue Devils had a strong season as well and have the talent to pull off the upset. Unfortunately for them, the Lady Crusaders won’t make it easy, and might be too difficult to overcome.
Prediction: Holy Cross defeats Old Forge
